Title: John Deere 180 Build
Post by: Burwell555 on February 06, 2010, 12:08:33 am
Ok I will be building a John Deere 180 to USLMRA prepared rules and race in the Ohio LC as well as to fit a local organization we are tryin to get going around home. I am undecided as to SP or CP with US but will be runnin a V twin intek for the other. This mower will incorporate a live axle for which I have all the parts as well as a home fabbed fully adjustable front axle. Anything I missed just ask away and we will cover as I move along. I will post progress as it is made and when I get access to my buddies wireless internet as Im on dial up.
I have done quite a bit of reading on here and talked to Howie and Frank the Tank and received quite a bit of advice as well as front end stuff from Chuck Miller. So moving on to a little bit of history of the mower and then pics!!
The Deere was setting out back with everything minus deck and was being used for a spare motor on the grass cutter after it donated the freshly rebuilt deck. Dad took the motor and said race it or junk it, so I saved it!

Here it is as I drug it in

So all in all its in pretty good shape...fenders are rusty but thats a given and I need to find a headlight lense but at the moment them are minor details  ;)
So I have about three days worth of work rolled into one big posting session....sorry guys!

Her it is in the stripping stages:

It came factory with the push pull cluch alraedy so I will be relocating it and usin it again. A friend of mine has with really good results
Well I got it mocked up to start putting rear axle in. Runnin Turf Pros on 8x7 Douglas wheels. I have regular 3 bolt cassettes, nothin special, that will hold free spin bearings. The axle is 1.25 moly. I have the EC multi pattern hubs as well as their sprockets and quick change hub to be shown later. I am up in the air on brakes.

The fenders are a little close to the tires so I will be raising them with 3/4 square tube. I am looking to incorporate a cross bar to weld seat bracket tabs to. then cut into the fenders to lower the seat a little, but not below the tops of the fender! Is this legal US guys?

Cassetes bolted in and frame cut to allow for easy removal of axle of need be. I learned the hard way on my old MTD.

Axle all bolted in settin on the stands still.

Complete and on the floor.

So other than personal preferences from some cuz its a Deere, what do ya guys think? Any questions?

You are definitly on the right track. I would get EC's large tranny plate. That will clean up any fex in the weaker rear portion on the frame. And make a removable cross brace of under that area too. That should make it quite rigid. I have heard the some guys use and modify the stock steering on these. This series has BIG 1" cast iron steering gears that look indestructable. I would like to see what you come up with.

That trailer hitch can be cut off square with the frame in all sanctions which would allow you to go 4" front and rear with no chassis rake.

Thanks guys, and George i plan on choppin it just aint made it there yet. i am making a trans plate just waitin on the EC bushing cuz they are out of stock. Flipper the steering looks stout I do agree but I prefer the feel and simplicity of direct personally. Hopefully I can get after it this evenin or tomorrow as I aquired a ton of parts at the springfield swap meet today

I need your tech support hotline burwell :D  Flipper you are right it is a beefy steering, I'm still using mine. If it hadn't been so beefed I'd never used it but I trust it and happy with how it turns.

Must be nice....these dang craftsmans I'm playin with have a plastic bushing in the steering gear that warps the first time you tug on it and lets the gears jump.  Found that out the hard way.  Got lucky I was in the middle of a wide open field.

Lol I know whatcha mean ctown, I've found out that steering is a very touchy thing when it comes to making the direct steering, I got an MTD I'm working on and the steering was prolly the hardest thing to satisfy myself, I know enough now I don't want another one like this.

Cool, Those Steering gears are heaviest I have seen yet, 1" Thick cast iron.
I have been collecting some sets from used mowers. I was going to try to use them on the L Series or STX series but have not figured out the engineering yet. Cast iron gears are a little hard to weld. Looks like I'll have to machine up some holding flanges for the gears. But they look like they will work, and they are beyond heavy duty. Looks like you can "Speed up" the turn ratio by making some of the actuators longer.

Lol haven't tried that but they are really a beefed steering gear, I liked the looks of it so I decided to try it and see how it worked, so far I've been happy with it and don't plan on changing it to direct.

Ok I have been a workin away but unable to post pics at home cuz of our crappy internet.  I managed to get my tranny plate built although I am still waitin on my tranny bushing from EC. It is made from 1/4 inch. It is 12 1/2 by 8 so I could get it in the frame. It also has the EC idler sprocket.

20Build/MowerRacingpics004.jpg)

Pic of it all welded in place

I also managed to cut all the mower deck supports off the motor plate and did some lightning on it. The whole piece went from 13 pounds to 6.

Rear frame cut out for sprocket clearance. I built the cover out of 1/8th inch steel and welded it in place to keep the strength of the rear part of the frame.

This is the sprocket cover before wedling it in place.

All welded in place.

As she sets now on sawhorses...gotta raise fenders yet.

Me and some friends went to the Springfield swap meet last satuday and some of my mail order stuff showed up. I bought stepped spindles, hubs, front wheels, fancy castellated nuts, a 14 inch John Deere yellow steering wheel, and my mail orderin inclueas 1 5/8 inch 083 wall chromoly for my axle tube, 3/4 moly for steering shaft, and steering wheel quick disconnect hub.

Instead of raising the fenders   take a hammer to them and flatten them out a little. That way it keeps your seat lower to the ground :)

I see you also bought a steering stabilizer. I've thought about those....has anyone used them before on their builds???
Title: Re: John Deere 180 Build
Post by: Burwell555 on February 13, 2010, 03:16:56 pm
beat them with a hammer to flatten out??? Guess i dont understand. I am raising them for tire clearance. As for the stabilizer im not sure how it works. I paid 25 bucks for it and its like 6 way adjustable so i guess ill put it on and see how it acts if i think i need too. i would be interested in hearing peoples experiences with them.

Yeah   turn it over and flatten the fender out for tire clearance  don't have to all of the fender   just some over the tire

eh..dont know if i like that idea honestly...clearance is needed directly over the top of tire centerline...i like the factory looks myself

8x8 rims, Turfmasters -16x8.
Not too crazy about the turf pro's.

Not USLMRA legal to do that.  USLMRA rules state fenders may not be altered for tire clearance.  The may be slightly moved, and thats where you can move them up.  The unfortunate side of that is, yes, your seat is higher.

yes jason thats what chuck told me. i dont think 3/4 inch is really gonna kill anything that i will personally notice. Personally i would rather have the fenders be factory unaltered because of the looks.
Flipper thats interesting. a friend of mine and i pondered the turf masters on the rear also. why do you not like turf pros?

I learned to race on Turmasters. I have become very comfortable with them on all kinds of terrain. My personal experience, The Turf Pros are not as good as Turmasters on grass wet grass, very loose, sandy/muddy tracks. They do work rather nice/better on Clay tracks. Again, just my personal preference. As far as the Fenders, ARMA has the same rules. We also need to see a minimum of 1/2" between the tire and side vertical rise of the fender.

Ok back home and had some time to work on it. My endplates and trans bushing from ec showed up while i was out of town so i was pupmed to see that box when i got home.  I welded the bushing in real quick then moved on to the dash support which took seemingly forever. I have a fetish for round tubing and use it when i can so it was a no brainer to use it in the dash support. I bent all the bend in my shop and redid it several times until it was too my liking. I used 1/2 inch cold rolled steel. Heres a few pics.

<a href="http://s860.photobucket.com/albums/ab164/burwell454/?action=view&current=MowerRacingpics010-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i860.photobucket.com/albums/ab164/burwell454/MowerRacingpics010-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">

Here is where I started. I only used the original dash mount. No factory bracing.
<a href="http://s860.photobucket.com/albums/ab164/burwell454/?action=view&current=MowerRacingpics011-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i860.photobucket.com/albums/ab164/burwell454/MowerRacingpics011-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">

Startin to take shape..
<a href="http://s860.photobucket.com/albums/ab164/burwell454/?action=view&current=MowerRacingpics012-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i860.photobucket.com/albums/ab164/burwell454/MowerRacingpics012-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">

Everything before bottom valence mounts were added.

This is it finished up from another angle..I still need to incorporate a fuel cell mount yet which will come this evening followed by a front axle!! Then she will at least be rollin.  >:D

Well I have gotten some much needed parts that finally showed up so hopefully tomorrow night after work I can get the front axle put in!! Tonight i did however manage to mount the fenders adn get then raised for tire clearance issues and to also finish clearin the top of my tranny.  i decided to go ahead and do alittle bracing off of this as well as shown in my pics.

So here is the seat bolted down. It fit right into the factory slots so i can adjust it fore and aft to suite my comforts. I am using the factory Deere seat.

This is from the rusty bottom.

This is everything bolted down and ready to go. Kinda gettin outta order but it will be ok.

This shot shows my tire to fender clearance. I was told a half inch is all i need but i ended up at 1 1/4. i think it looks better personally. Everything fits in the rear real nicely.

The next two shots are of the braces i welded to the outside of the frame to support and bolt the fender deck to. it may be overkill but i can put all my weight on it with a pretty decent push and it is rock solid. This will also keep the fenders from crackin up in the front like they normally do. I used 1 inch round tube and welded tabs to the side of it then drilled and tapped the tabs to 1/4 inch bolt.

Then last but not least for this evenin ( well early mornin lol) is my fender mount/bracing. its 3/4 thin wall and i cut it down too follow the angle the fenders would mount on to make it sturdier. it is connected to the frame and has a round tube cross bar in between.

Ok so at this point, what do ya guys think? Any questions, tips tricks, or concerns?

It is proven that weight is not always the enemy.... some of us carry our own ballast, and get around the track pretty quick.
The way you have that solid rod down there, is not bad in my opinion. If it doesn't move, it don't flex.

i agree and understand totally birdman but is is thin wall tube, I cut caps and welded to the end to seal it up. Sometimes the little things count lol. I just thought it looked big and oversize buit as you said, it wont flex and thats key.  ;)

Ok fellas...been busy lately and think i got burnt out and was losin interest but a little wicked brought his kawi powered mtd over this weekend and remotivated me!! So i got my axle built and welded in. I used 1 5/8 .083 wall chromoly round tube. My spindles are stepped 5/8 to 3/4 with 1/2 inch bearings. I used the 2 piece endplates from ec as well. My heims all come from Jegs. To get it all fitted i welded two 4 inch long pieces of conduit to the frame to set ride height and that is exactly where it ended up at!!! Lots of pics in this thread as I have a lot to catch up on.
As I said this is how i welded the conduit on the frame.

In a few hours it will all be one piece!!!

This is going to be my spindle bolt set up. I am not sure if the castellated set up is needed but it sure cant hurt!!
Here is my first endplate all put together.
Spindle and shims in..
Well here i set all the angles where i am starting my chassis tuning from. Then tack welded them to the table at desired angle to notch the end of the axle tube to match my kpi angle. call it cheatin or whatever, i call it the benefits of a steel workbench!!!
Another shot from the side..

Axle tube with end plates welded to

Axle assembled and ready to weld in
(http://i860.photobucket.com/albums/ab164/burwell454/MowerRacingpics012-2.jpg)

In the frame to stay!!!!

My purty new front tires and wheels.

Axle is in and settin on all fours!!!!
At this point it feels like i have crossed the mountain but a TON more to do!!

This is her after the front axle was put in the steering wheel is just settin on the dash.

Backin up a step...this is the axle welded in and all pieces back on the spindles on the sawhorses ready for more choppin

This is a shot of my fender risers/mount/and support. This piece is pullin triple duty. i used 3/4 thin wall square and 1/2 round for the cross brace.

The above piece from the rear..

Next is clutch!!!! From the factory this thing had a push pull clutch that a buddy of mine used with good results so i am reusing it. I modified the factory bracketry to be narrower and set down on the frame farther which in turn made the bottom support need massaging.

I am running a 6/4 pulley set up also. I put the belt guards on but didnt get pics. they are simple like Georges. I just welded 1/4 nuts on the frame and trans plate and inserted the bolt!!

Thank you pitguy. I am just tryin to make it race ready to keep around for a while. I am using good parts so I will have it for years to come and if I dont like it i should be able to get a good chunk out of it as a roller

lol im not tryin to start somethin like that but thank you. i have a lot to build and buy yet including decals and paint!!! kinda not wantin to put numbers or class letters on it lol.
Anyhow, my buddy chad, (alittlewicked) brought his box frame over this weekend and we pounded the steering out. He followed georges 07 build and then i more less copied his cuz it just plain works!! I used 3/4 chromoly for my steering shaft. It does have a u joint even though it is a basic direct steer set up. I used some oversize 3/4 heim ends i bought from wayne shaffer on here the other day. 31 bucks shipped for all 3..not bad considering jegs gets 29.99 a piece for em new! My steering shaft also uses a quick disconnect hub as well as an aluminum Slack 14 inch steering wheel. Underneath, i used all 3/8 left and right hand heims into tapped aluminum tube as tom fox has posted in the chassis section.

this is one of them shots i took holdin the camera upright to get it all squeezed in there. Might need to :censored: your head around to make it out.

As I am doing direct steer, next decision was if i should have the tie rod in the front or rear of the axle. I decided on the front but it would require some round tube work to clear the spindle arms and be able to hang the hood in the factory spot and let it still pivot. Took a  little thiknin but heres what we got.

And last but not least, a pic of the link between steering shaft and spindle. As well as the spindle mounting point.

Well it wasnt rainin sunday so I decided some pics were neccessary!!

Ok well after reading some chassis topics about flex and hearing some of the pros opinions, I decided to buy in on Georges theory of makin my frame have as little flex as possible. Obviously it works for him!! So tonight I flipped my deere on its back and put my x brace under the dash between the motor plate and tranny plate. It is kind of a tight fit, but not too hateful. The clutch rod and linkage is all I should have left to put under there.
Some pics of it before X brace:

Here is a view from the bottom lookin up...I used 3/4 4130 chromoly round tube.

From the top lookin in...

And Rooster these last two are as you requested...a right side up good shot my dash support. I got 2 different angles.

So after puttin her back on the ground and settin on it, the chassis feels way more rigid under me. I hope it is the ticket to success! I have not gotten a chance to put it on the scales to see how it transfers since I added the X and will let everyone know how she pans out!!! Rooster, tell me what ya think about them pics of that support.

What kind of spindles are you using ?
Can you post another pic of your steering ?
Where abouts in Ohio are you racing?

I am 45 minutes from Toledo   So how far from Toledo would you be ?
Title: Re: John Deere 180 Build

go down to lima ohio and 2 hours east... we are really running around in yards for now but we are gettin more and more serious... we live in a little town called marengo... might go run in larue ohio with is about an hour and 30 min east of lima...

Post by: Burwell555 on March 25, 2010, 10:25:22 pm
Ok ill try my best to help ya out on them questions. First off as for the spindles, I'm really not sure! Lol I bought them at the kart swapmeet in springfield ohio in febuary. I can tell you they are a bearing style,1/2 to be exact. The spindle snout is a stepped 5/8 to 3/4 design and they are set at 10 kpi.
I can get ya some steering shots tomorrow when I get back from work, what would ya like to see?
I am located in north central ohio. Not sure of distance from toledo but I am 40 mins straight up I71 north of columbus in Marengo. Hope this hels and if ya wanna know anything else let me know!
I also need to add to that we are going to try and run the uslmra lc races up north here and go down south to new lexington and try and run with the arma limestone valley club.

The first two pics show the round bar i welded to the spindle. This is where the link hooks up coming from the steering shaft

thanks for the pictures   Did you fasten in two spots for strength ?       Oh  I scraped all the mower stuff i had on wednesday  In the end it was put together by a blind man LOL     I went to my uncles to scrap a riding mower he had.  Turns it out it is a 1985 Murray step thru with a peerless 600 transaxle with cutting deck.  It has two push-pull belt tensions on it and also two mounts i can make a jack shafts with   I tore it all apart today and will post some pictures this weekend    Thanks again for the pictures :)
Title: Re: John Deere 180 Build
Post by: Burwell555 on March 26, 2010, 11:10:33 pm
Well I welded that rod on in two spots for strength yes, but it also pushes and pulls on both sides of it, just depends on which way your turning. I still need to add a small support about halfway between the spindle and draglink bolt. The draglink bolt actually goes through a piece of 1/2 inch round tube that is welded vertically between the two round rods. Hop i didnt confuse more than i helped

Title: Re: John Deere 180 Build
Post by: racingjohndeere55 on March 27, 2010, 08:40:18 am
From an enginering standpoint, I dont know if that is going to be strong enough. The torsional strength of that rod will be decreased the longer it is. way too easy to get bent and it will adversely affect the handling of your mower.

 My :twocents:

Post by: Burwell555 on March 27, 2010, 09:39:12 am
Howie you are referring to my round rod set up that is welded to the spindle, correct? If so I still have a small bit of a brace to tie the rods from the front and rear of the spindle together. Yes right now it flexes, but the brace should get rid of it. Hope I didn't confuse ya

howie that setup is actually pretty strong... its solid 5/16 bar... its what i have on my tractor and granted i havent driven it yet but i do believe it will work pretty good i have really cranked on my steering and it really doesnt move... it has to be stonger than just a piece of 1/4 inch angle iron... granted its not a center pivot system but we will just have to see come soon when zach and i do some test laps

Yes the axle is a moly kart axle, cassettes, bearings, sprocket hubs and spindles are kart parts. The front axle endplates are from EC distributing as well as the 40 pitch sprockets and rear wheel hubs. Thank you for the fab work comment.

Simple, tough, aint had one bend or break. I dont care about adjustability. 3/4 grade 8 bolts. 4 x 1/4 inch box tubing cut in half. I drill a hole behind the head of the bolt, weld the front, then plug weld the back. It is now one piece of steel.

oh i understand howie. no doubt its stout! my set up is just totally different. obviously your axle is not adjustable and mine is so i cant make my set up like that. thanks though!!

So I got me a box from bmi the other day. It had my pedals, different fuel tank, fuel line and master cylinder.

Heres a shot of my perty billet pedals  :omg:

Deck halves all welded on. I took this straight from Georges 07 build. Yes they are from a Murray widebody in hopes of makin it a better workin chassis according to some

Well I have been pretty busy lately but finally found some time to get after it again. I got pedals last week and wanted to get them mounted, so the fun begins!!

I will be using these pedals for throttle clutch and brake. I will probably catch hate mail over the foot throttle but thats whats comfortable to me.

Somehow these pedals will fit here. As of Friday afternoon I had no clue as to how though!!!

Turns out it was possible!! I think it turned out pretty clean actually.

The throttle and brake were actually quite simple. I made a few tabs with a 3/8 hole to match the pedal, and welded them to the fender deck supports after holesawing and cutting slots in the foot rest area.

But the clutch however was the total opposite. I had one heck of a time with it. I just couldnt satisfy myself. I am only showing the pics of the cross shaft and pedal mount i decided upon.

First step was to make the clutch pedal go onto the 3/4 tube cross shaft.  Pretty simple after about 2 seconds of thinkin!!   I made a tab with a 3/4 hole to put over the cross shaft and drilled a 3/8 hole for the existing hole in the pedal and a 5/16 hole for the corner of the slot that was cut in the pedal upon arrival. The pics will explain it better than I just did.

Make sense?

I decided to go with a cross shaft set up similar to my old MTD but wanted it no be a little lighter so I built my own all together.
This is it all complete ready to bolt in.

So after many hours and several designs and cussing, I finally got it. I ended up thoughts of my old MTD, factory Deere, and added my own twist for a custom one off piece. Then got to put it all together

In the next few pics, I try to show the shaft, clutch and linkage in all that stuff underneath. There isnt much room since the X brace went in.

So they are on and need a little attention yet. I plan to cut the brake and clutch pedal so the pegs do not overlap. Also I noticed on my mentors, Chuck Miller, Toro, that he had a chain run from the clutch pedal to the brake pedal. This allows you to slow down as the clutch is pushed in. I will set it up so the brake dont come on until the clutch is abput 1/2 to 3/4 the way pushed in. That should solve any issues and clear up any misconceptions. So what do ya guys think as I am nearing time to test drive. I made me a to do list this evening and I dont anything real major to do other than battery tray and brakes.

Well did some tinkerin today. Nothin too streneous on a holiday.   But I decided to redo the fuel cell and mount. I went smaller to make a little more motor room. With the INTEK twin and my old set up I had about 1/4 inch from shroud to cell mount. Kinda felt the need to change for the sake of ever strappin a different twin on. Not sure what the future holds, so Im tryin to keep things open.

I ended up gettin a 2 quart factory tank from the surplus center. Im pretty pleased with how it worked out.

Next was the battery tray. I got a 400 EX battery from my buddy that owns a quad shop, Its pretty compact and thats what i needed!! It is a sealed design once filled and i paid 40 bucks for it. I am runnin out of room.

Simple battery tray from 1/2 inch angle

I couldnt decide where to put it to allow ease of access to terminals, cassette bolts, and make the caliper fit where i want. I decided flush with the bottom of the frame was best. So here it is and I hope its legal.

In place and strapped in with my home bent aluminum strap.

So let me know what ya guys think!!

thank ya jerb. its aboutthe only spot i could put it that allowed for access to everything. I plan on charging studs just aint got em yet. The pedals actually come from BMI Karts. The regular round steel were 20 a piece and the billet aluminum ones i got were 28 each. kinda seemed like a no brainer.

Well im getting pretty close to gettin it all buttoned up. The last of the major stuff got finished last night. I got all the brake stuff put on finally leaving me with exhaust shifter wiring then piddly adjustments.

So I scored this Wilwood 2 piston on ebay for 25 bucks. I went with a cast MCP master cylinder, and opted to go with a 10 inch rotor on a sprocket hub from aps.

Mounting the caliper actually ended up bein quite simple after a few hours of frustrating cutting and building. Then dad steps in and looks with me and after a 5 min conversation i had revised my plan!! Sometimes 2 minds are better than 1 and always take the constructive criticism. Also take note of the braided stainless line from JEGS.

Heres a shot from the back side showing the notch that i need to cut out. Then realized after getting it all together and bled i still need to finesse it with the sander wheel.  :bash:

Then finally my linkage and the hole in the fender. The linkage is made of, you guessed it, 1/2  round tube with 1/4 inch heim joints and adapters welded on the end. That way i can move the pedal to fit me comfortably with a simple turn of the rod. Hopefully all this will pass tech. I do not see why it wouldnt.

The only concern I would have is running out of gas. 2qts won't last long especially if your running a built motor and going more than 10 laps.

Ok sorry for the wrong info. It is 3 quart. I got fat fingers when I type! Lol. I think it should be enough for a 12.5 flatty as I'm startin in sportsman and my twin for the local segment is stock.

Yeah that should be enough....I ran a 3 qt. Aluminum Kart tank for years in SP and BP....only thing was in BP on long tracks with lots of cautions it would be on fumes by the time the race was over. That's why I was letting you know if it was a 2 qt you probably wouldn't be finishing a race....ok continue on...very nice build by the way!!

Tank...If you get a chance, send a pic of how your steering system worked out.
Thanks!

I was just looking back thru this, sorry I forgot about the picture flipper but I totalled this mower at my last race. After the wreck it bent the frame but the steering was still good.

I used the stock steering sector because it's heavy duty. Even after the crash my steering was unharmed but the frame wasn't that lucky. Never had any problems out of it. I did have a rod with heim joints connecting the steering.
Title: Re: John Deere 180 Build
Post by: Burwell555 on April 26, 2010, 09:59:33 pm
Well I have been pretty busy helpin dad lately paint a few trucks and such, but I have had some time and  almost have it done!!
A few little things to start with. I hooked my clutch and brake pedals together with a short piece of chain. Now when I push the clutch in about halfway, it starts bringin the brake sin too.

Then under this  hood, there isnt as much room as there looks. I had to cut the outside of the valve covers off and cap them flat to keep from rubbing.

Next was fuel line and I had to work to get the pump in there so it wouldnt hit the hood.

Then it was onto the shifter. I made a pivot set up and the shifter comes up between my legs. Nuetral is down, 5th gear is all the way up.

And its just not a true race machine without a race car shift knob!!

Then it was onto gauge mounting and wiring. I mounted my Digatron in the dash as that is the mount style it is, added oil pressure gauge and voltmeter from Auto Meter. The oil psi is mainly for my twin. Kill switch is Pro Armor unit. Then i have my ignition toggle, gauge lights and still need to add another for the voltmeter. Notice the starter button is not there.

Here is where the starter button is located. Easily accessible with my left thumb. I am running a steering wheel quick disconect so I went to NAPA and got all the stuff to make a weather pack plug so I can easily remove and not get water in the plug when I wash it.

Next was exhaust. I had a delima trying to decide how to go about this. I had contemplated running it down the frame and doing a turnout sidepipe or to do this. All this was built from a super builder kit from mandrel-bends.com. It had 4 180 bends, 2 90s 2 45s and 4 ft straight pipe for 86 bucks. All mild steel 18 gauge and all bends are 3 inch radius. REAL NICE pieces here.Collector is 2 1/4 random bend that I found in dads left over header bends box.

Here it is with the hood on in race position.

And the collector. It sets about 2 1/4 off the ground. Same clearance as my steering drag link.

So at this point the seat needs adjusted. I got throttle hooked up this evening, I need to figure out my fuel issues and add a brace in the spindle where my steering link attaches and it will be ready for paint. Whats your thoughts? Any questions comments or concerns??

Why did you decide to run your exhaust the way you did instead of along the frame and then have it turn out?
Title: Re: John Deere 180 Build
Post by: Burwell555 on April 26, 2010, 10:46:39 pm
Well there were several reasons. 1, it is about the best way performance wise, as it allows for wicked bottom end torque, and it just flat screams on top end. A good friend of mine builds quad race motors and he pointed that out to me. 2 It would have been very tight trying to squeeze then out from under the hood without cutting it and i absolutely was not cuttin the hood because i have a flatty to run sp with in the sanction races and the exhaust will be totally different. 3 A side pipe would have probably entailed cuttin the frame down up top or at least severely notching it. and 4 i just didnt have enough 45 degree bends to do the side pipe the way i wanted. last but not least, I recall seeing ryker having somethin similar on his vanny and it must work if he does it!!! that guy is sharp!!

thanks for the pictures   Did you fasten in two spots for strength ?       Oh  I scraped all the mower stuff i had on wednesday  In the end it was put together by a blind man LOL     I went to my uncles to scrap a riding mower he had.  Turns it out it is a 1985 Murray step thru with a peerless 600 transaxle with cutting deck.  It has two push-pull belt tensions on it and also two mounts i can make a jack shafts with   I tore it all apart today and will post some pictures this weekend    Thanks again for the pictures :)

You got an uncle like me then.......I went down to his place yesterday to trade him a case of beer for an oppy he had....I ended up leavin there with the oppy, a 12.5 flatty, a horizontal 8 horse, a john deere 108(8 horse briggs and 800 rear) and a john deere 68 RER (8 horse briggs and 739 trans).  Pretty good day with only a case of beer invested!

Ok guys. Its for the most part done, well as done as it getsas i am constantly changing things and still chasing oil leaks and blowing out problems and want to paint the valvecovers and small things. But anyways heres some pics after a little dirt track racing!!

I started by filling in all the factory holes in the fender deck with bondo, didnt take any camera pics cuz i kinda forgot but have them on my phone and facebook. After several coats of mud and HOURS of sanding away, it got 3 coats of nason 2k filler primer, then a final block sand on the third coat with 600 grit. On spray night, it got some nason 2k urethane sealer then it was time for the yellow on the deck halves as they are welded on. The greatest part of base coat clear coat is the working time. In literally 15 minutes after spraying the yellow, i had it all taped up and was spraying green. Three good coats later, i sprayed on the clear coat. Now untape the yellow and then i used the cheap Acme colision stuff from napa. Everything gets clear at the same time, not per each color. Not bad for only 30 bucks a quart with activator. he hood was not near as bad as it only required a little mud. The grille got sandblasted and painted gloss black the same as the frame with cheap napa base clear. My buddy works at deere, so he got me new decals for the sides of the hood pretty reasonable. All in all i did spend a lot ofmoney in paints, primers, and sand paper but it was well worth it. Especially looking back and havin my dad tell me i did all the prep work well and spraying things out nice and flat with minimal orange peel in the clear. Sooo, when i get it washed for the next race ill snap a few more shots but what ya guys think?

That...just plain looks mean!.......FANTASTIC job!........excellent attention to details.
I used the same idea for deck halves, I added some small alum 1" angle for foot-holds to keep my big "Flipper" feet in place.

Free camping.  Showers on site.  A LOAD of FUN!

When I was there 3 years ago the showers were clean, but a bit of a walk.  Not sure how they have changed it over the years.

When I was in Minnesota, I made the mistake of Cryin and Moaning to Art Neavil about Lemans Starts....he quickly reminded me that he was 30 yrs my senior and had no problems doing it and that he "...don't wanna hear your Cryin and moaning crap, get your butt on that mower and go kick some grass"
He may have been a little more explicative than that?  :D

I have heard the secret to a Lemans Start is practice, or how your mower is set-up, or how well it starts, or .....they are all wrong!

The secret to the Lemans Start is in your head! Don't tell your self "I don't like this", "I can't do this" or any other negative crap! Just go kick some grass!

where did u get your stepped spindles
Title: Re: John Deere 180 Build
Post by: Burwell555 on October 07, 2010, 12:41:12 pm
I bought them at a go kart swap meet. not sure of the brand, but if ya go to performance manufacturing on the internet they have spindle sets for axiom and phantom chassis that you could make work. But i have since switched to straight 5/8 spindles to be able to run front brakes. I have a used EC set on the way, i hear they are pretty nice pieces so i guess we wil see!!

i dont know if you previously stated it or not but in your last pics what size turf masters did you get on the back? and is it an 8x8 rim?
Title: Re: John Deere 180 Build
Post by: Burwell555 on November 12, 2010, 10:19:09 pm
turf masters in the rear are 16x 7.50-8 and are actually on a 7 inch wide wheel not the conventional 8 like most run. You WILL want to add tubes to them!!!

And i did a little home work, for stepped spindle check out quarter midget stuff or i was also told EC sells the stepped stubs if your going to build your own

Yes we sell the stepped snouts and spindle barrels and spindle arms for those choosong to build their own. We also have straight 5/8 snouts (axles)

About 1/4 inch we usually make our own and just buy the bushing from ec

why do you want to run tubes your not stretching them tires?

It was a preference. I had plenty of stagger...I can stretch a tire with a tube in it. Air pressure is Air pressure...

ok since I have went threw this build in full, How well is the X bracing working? compaired to a full channel type reinforcement. thanks.
Title: Re: John Deere 180 Build
Post by: Burwell555 on October 30, 2012, 12:22:56 am
The x brace worked well, but had about 4 inches or so behind the tranny plate yet in front of the rear axle that had a little flex. It wasn't bad until I noticed the frame start cracking in that area. My "3rd gen" frame is now boxed front to back. It seems to be the most consistent as far as driving into the corner and most responsive to a chassis tune and tweak than the earlier versions of this chassis I have built.

now "boxed" did you add rectangle tube or did you add C channel to it to box it in? also do you have any pics of your other builds anywhere?

thanks again Burwell555
Title: Re: John Deere 180 Build

It's a c channel frame to start. So add 1/8" flat iron strips between the top and bottom lip. Tubing gets heavy.
Title: Re: John Deere 180 Build
Post by: Burwell555 on October 30, 2012, 07:23:11 am
You could add strips like drew said, but mine is done with a flat piece of sheet metal fr front to back then welded to the inside of the lips of the frame. Basically turns the c channel into a piece of rectangle at that point
