Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: How far can a 35/38 Vanguard block be bored
« on: September 05, 2022, 10:58:08 am »
A 38 vanguard  is the same bore as a 40 intek @ 2.97, depending on rod length is going to determine if you need to cut the piston down, but from experience I?ve seen you can bore out roughly 160 thou before to come through the sleeve, so keep that in mind and sleeving might not leave a lot of room for head bolts to bump up to the kohler/ Briggs 44 3.13+ pistons , other may know more, this is just what I?ve observed

Briggs Flathead / Re: Timing For Stock 12 hp Briggs Flathead
« on: September 05, 2022, 10:45:08 am »
Are you running a billet flywheel?, if so that will set it at 27-28 degrees , unless things have changed you don?t want to go more than 30 or you risk breaking the timing gear on the crank, I myself still run on full negitive on my billet flywheel; Moved up one notch and did not noticed a difference, hope this helps

Good point both Paul’s lol, yes battery is good, cables are being swapped out ( had stock ones on) I’ll mention about the valve guide clearance! Yes to my knowledge flywheel key is good, I’ll make a point to check all those things off our list, thanks fellas!

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 44 intek hard starting
« on: April 09, 2020, 08:20:44 pm »
Hey guys buddy of mine has a built vtwin, billet wheel set full neg ,  really good honed block , stock pistons with new rings , arc rods, precision cheetah cam, 49 heads milled 110 , ec roller rockers, dual springs with stock push rods, , valves are set at .003, cam is installed  straight up , yes it has the hi torque starter a good battery, when he goes to whirl it over it it keeps jamming up on the compression stroke , any ideas, need a bigger batter , weak starter , internal issues , anyone run into this before or have any further ideas? Thanks I’m sure it’s been covered before just covering all my bases , cheers

594539 is the standard size piston, you would need to get a 20 over piston and matching rings, and have your cylinder bored,

What about valve guides? Is it best to replace them when rebuilding a 28 flathead for racing?

Certainly not going to hurt to ensure a proper sealing valve , along with measuring the valves for wear

Word of advice, start with a motor that has the nut on holding the flywheel on that way is is more likely to have the removable eccentrics, to allow brass counterweights, or you’ll have to get a machine shop remove the eccentrics from other cracks, saves some work

I’d stay away from the 11hp(25ci) unless you’re able to re-work it and make it flow as much or as good as the 12hp (28ci)head , but once you think you have enough flow, get more, flatheads don’t need the compression that OHV’s do to make power the need the flow to get the fuel mixture into the cylinder, do some searching on here there’s lots of info on flatheads!

I’ll correct myself , get as much flow as possible without opening/hogging out the ports, or you’ll ruin your velocity, there’s a fine line, I’m sure other will know more, and chime in, there is a balance, sometimes less is more 😉

Did a search and didn’t come up with anything unless I did it wrong but wondering if Anyone have an idea of what a stock 28ci Briggs head cc would be or if anyone has done this, curiosity is killing the cat and will help with further setup , thanks
