Oh jeeze what 10 years ago plus this place was hopping. I get Facebook became huge and we lost one of our main contributors but we gotta bring this back. Its been years since I sat on a lawnmower designed to go way faster than it was ever meant to go. Back in the day Rooster, Marc, and I would spend hours on skype talking about almost anything. We spent hours and hours playing some World Series of Poker that we were maybe 5% lucky with. We would spend hours trying to make the "boat anchor" opposed twin faster and more powerful. I always enjoyed the banter from George Herrin about that thing. I would like to think some life long friendships started here and it's sad to see it slowly dying down. There were times that 5-10 mower builds were going on at once with everyone sharing ideas of what has worked and what doesn't work. If everyone could push everyone back to the forum from Facebook I think we would see this grow to places that it once was.

To go fast you must be able to stop fast. Put the whoa in before you put the go in. A better handling machine will outrun a higher HP machine.

Briggs Flathead / Re: Opposed Twin Ignition Problems (And Solutions)

We had problems with the coils over heating after the engine was shut off. We always used the stock coils but after the race if you just shut the engine off it still continues to make heat and heat up. We took care of this problem by putting a fan on top of the flywheel after the engine was shut off to cool it down. Once we did this we never lost another coil. Best of luck.

Al I am still around periodically check the forum. However life happens and mower racing had to go on the back burner.

Wow, so much misinformation in this thread.
As someone who has built & run engines in excess of 2000hp with all three methods of forces induction (n2o, turbo, blower) all I can say is do not take advice from someone who hasn't done it successfully.

I have to agree. Also this site is about sanctioned lawnmower racing in a safe manner. What are you truly hoping to gain "supercharging" a 5hp engine? Not trying to shoot you down but maybe look into some local lawnmower racing and before you know it you will be building a safe chassis and a safe motor the right way. Best of luck.

I wouldn't say the flat head twin is junk by any means. I ran one competitively for years.  If you are going to run an opposed the better of the engines is the 46 cube with the pressure lube system. We ran one for 4 years with 0 mechanical problems. The only thing I have found is that after a race when you shut the engine off the coil would heat up from not having any air circulating around it. This would cause the coil to stop working, we solved this by placing a fan on the flywheel after we shut it down. to keep air circulating until the engine cooled off.

I will say....IF and IF you sleeve it to fit the 31ci pistons it wakes that engine up. My last year of racing we had an engine built by Rooster and it was a rocket in the CP class. Sadly, we only got one season out of it due to valve guide failure.

I figure we had roughly 2000 into our last oppy we built, machine work done by Rooster. Tons of power won almost every race it was in, I couldn't keep a trans in the thing though. 46 crank, 31 pistons and a lot of valve and carb work.

Hey asking all for some help. An independent film company followed the fire department of Detroit, MI around for a year and make a documentary. They are all looking for donations to fully fund the movie. They currently have select showings all across the nation. I will post the link below if everyone could check it out, watch the trailer and maybe find a showing close to your home town that would be awesome. This shows a film crew following Engine Company 50 which is one of the nations busiest stations, it also shows the struggles of budget cuts and the demands that firefighters go though.

The ambulance company I work for mobile medical response sent 5 ambulances with a crew of 3 and our DART(Disaster Assistance Response Team) trailer out. The dart trailer is a mobile hospital and all of the ambulances are als. Right now they are in new jersey but will be headed to NYC sometime today. I didn't get lucky enough to get deployed this round.

Doing this I recommend a rebuilt two times a year. Once in the middle of the season and once right before your last BIG race aka. Nationals. The rings in ours were completely shot with a full season of racing on it.

The oppy all the way with just a flywheel.
