Briggs Flathead / Briggs Opposed Twin Crank and Cam Timing?
« on: December 04, 2019, 02:24:13 pm »
I'm re-assembling a Briggs opposed twin engine.  For the crank and cam timing do you just align the dots on the cam and crank gear?  Is there a number one cylinder?  Been trying to find the answer on google with no luck.

Thanks,

« on: October 25, 2018, 10:12:31 pm »
Anyone know of anyplace to pick up his motor 101 DVD?  I seen it mentioned in a couple of threads and wanted to get it before working on my opposed twin.  I tried getting in contact with him with no success.

Briggs Flathead / Briggs 40ci Engine specs
« on: March 13, 2018, 11:01:31 pm »
I'm having a difficult time trying to find engine specs on these engines.  The specs I'm looking for aren't published or they aren't consistent from different places.

Engine ID 402417  0660  01

Bore: 3.438"
Stroke: 2.156"
intake valve lash: 0.005"
exhaust valve lash: 0.008"

I need:
connecting rod length
compression ratio
Intake and Exhaust valve diameter
Intake and Exhaust valve steam diameter
Stock camshaft specs:
-valve lift
-duration @ 0.050"
-LSA
-degreed centerline
-exhaust port length

I would appreciate any info I can get.

Briggs Flathead / Internal Engine Coatings
« on: March 13, 2018, 01:21:33 pm »
New to the forum.  Looks like this is the place for knowledge on these B&S opposed flatheads.  I have been reading a lot of post today and learned a lot.  I have a 40 c.i. engine I'm building.  Its out of an old Craftsman GTV/16 Varidrive.  402417  0660  01.  Oil mods are at the top of my list.

Would thermal barrier coatings work in an air cooled engine?  Thermal barrier coatings would go on the top of the piston, combustion chamber and valves.  Could also coat the inside of the exhaust ports.  The coatings are usually used in liquid cooled engines, just wondering if there would be a difference with an air cooled engine.

Dry film lubricant on the piston skirts I don't foresee a problem with.
