Driveline / I D without tag
« on: October 08, 2011, 09:33:15 pm »
Got a good find today! Stopped at a garage sale today, had all the normal stuff except a trailer with engines, carbs, blower housings, and a 5hp briggs. I mess around with mini bikes and go-karts so I asked how much? He says aw $5 and take the pile, ok cool, and hiding behind them is a 700 complete. How much for that, he says got to get more for that, $10, couldn't get money out fast enough. It's tight but the tag is gone, don't even see a place for it. It has the Indian head and some other numbers but they are cast into the aluimum. I have not torn it apart yet. Any thing else to tell what number?

Briggs Flathead / Flatty single blocks
« on: September 28, 2011, 09:45:31 pm »
The single cube question made me think, Is there any difference between the thickness of block casting's between new and old. Is there a better block to build. I have never heard this asked before.

Coffee Shop / position in frame
« on: September 18, 2011, 09:39:46 pm »
I was at my track today and noticed some of the guys are running their singles spark pulg facing the rear. Does anyone have a good reason why you would want to mount it that direction? My first thought would be they could be starving the slinger of oil. You can't tell me it puts the carb opening facing forward to force fuel through, that dog isn't gunna hunt! Personal preferance? Any ideas. The ones I saw were flatty's.

First GOD BLESS AMERICA!          DO YOU remember what you were doing 10 years ago today. I was at work and walked into the office / waiting room and the tv was showing the twin towers and one was burning. I asked my boss what happened, and he said "someone just screwed a plane into one of the towers". Then while we were both watching the other plane hit! Instant lump in my throat, and I said "we are under attack". All the boss could say is "yes". It all went downhill from there. I heard somone say "this is our pearl harbor". Count your blessings, not just today but everyday! O YA thank a VET, FIREFIGHTER, FIRST RESPONDER, AND A POLICE OFFICER, because their jobs are harder than ever!

Briggs Flathead / valve guides
« on: June 15, 2011, 12:37:37 pm »
If you were to make guides what material would you make them out of ?  I understand bronze but how about mild steel, and if so what kind of steel?  How about for stainless, or titanium valves?        Any thoughts?

Briggs Flathead / STOCK CAM
« on: April 03, 2011, 09:51:14 pm »
HERES A QUESTION I KEEP GETTING DIFFERENT ANSWERS TO. I HAVE BEEN TOLD ALL CAMS ARE THE SAME, AND HAVE BEEN TOLD DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS HAVE DIFFERENT CAM NUMBERS. AS IN , LIFT, DURATION,CENTER LINES. MEANING A LAWNMOWER WOULD BE DIFFERENT THAN A GENERATOR, OR A PUMP. I AM MAINLY TALKING ABOUT A 28 C.I. ANY THOUGHTS?

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / OIL BURNER
« on: February 27, 2011, 09:14:11 pm »
Heres one for grass cutter mechanics. To get a rider from my neighbor he wants his grass cutter fixed. It's a scotts brand [at least on the hood] with a intek 31 cube briggs single. I got it running, plugged up carb, so I changed the oil made it run. It won't move, it smoked a idler pulley, I changed the idler and belt. I drove it around the yard , it worked fine. Then I put the deck on, went for another ride, turned on the blade and it smokes! bad. I pulled off the air filter and have a lot of oil, I checked the gap on the breather  and it doesn't have a gap. I do suspect the breather but I don't know these engines. Is there a particular oil or breather problem with these engines. thanks!
