Chassis / steering help needed
« on: March 07, 2008, 12:56:39 am »
Hi guys,
I am having a bit of a problem with the steering set up on my mower. I have to clear the pully at the front and to do so i need to move the piviot point of the bell crank forward. This means that the steering looks kind of funny compared with most of the other one ones i have seen.I have also tried different lenth bell cranks and have drilled holes in the arms to try different positions however i dont seem to get enough movement on the out side spindle. I know that one moves more then the other (akerman effect). Could you maybe look at the sizes of the belcranks and let me know what you guys run or maybe a way to get around this problem.

This is my trial bell crank moved to far back it would hit the pully if it was here

This is the set up to give you an idea of scale

This is wear the bellcrank needs to be to clear the pully.
This may work fine but i would like some input from people that know more than i
Cheers

Driveline / Re: Regreasing transaxel

I have used a BP product called liquid grease, it is designed for hi load applications. Its quite thick but seems to do the job.I would have thought a synthetic would be to thin for the tolerances in the trans. I know if you put to thin an oil in a car engine that wears out quicker and gets really noisy. 8)

Well i finally managed to find some brakes at a good price. I love the internet!. I got a complete rear set up and disc for $50.00.Now i just have to sort out the mounting . I have made up a rough mounting plate for the disc so that i can get the caliper bracket in the right place.

Next i have completed the clutch set up and installed , it gives good movement but i think the original spring is to weak so i will have to change to a stronger one

I have started work on the steering. I am going to make it with what i can lay my hands on . I have decided to put a 5* camber and will slot the plates to give me caster adjustment. As this is my 1st mower to many adjustments might be counter productive. I have machined the spindle and holders and then will weld and reinforce. I think i will use a direct steering shaft with bell crank on the front axle in the middle. This seems to be the best way to go.

I have repaired the side of the body by welding in new steel , so now i have to finish the clean up and prime this part. I have also welded in patches to the chassis where they were required after i removed the rusty parts.

Will need to sort out the tie rods and joints now . Just looking to see what i can find. So far the mower has cost me the price of the brakes to build a few favors and lots of my time. I am certainly enjoying building it and i cant wait to get it up and running!

Briggs Flathead / Re: Timing advance
« on: February 18, 2008, 04:13:45 pm »
Do the offset keys come in different degree advances?. With my race car i used a timing light and advanced a couple of dergrees at a time until it had the best performance on the track and was not pinking. I could do the same thing on my mower by putting a mark on the flywheel and using my timing light . Then i could make small adjustments.
Do you know how the advance works in these engines or does it not have one. I would assume you could modify the advance to suit the carb and cam set up . Just thinking out loud im sure you guys have probably tried all these things before.

Briggs Flathead / Timing advance

Hi,

If i sloted the holes or made a bracket to allow me to move the igniter pick up on the motor to the advance side and made sure the airgap was right would that allow me to change the timing on the motor?.

Just a thought.

Chassis / Re: Spindles

If they are made like the ones over here i think i would steer clear of them. Only designed for very low loads and speed. Might be different over there. 8)

Got a bit of time in the workshop today. Managed to weld up the chassis and mount fully. Machined down the jackshaft to fit the pullys in and welded in the top tensioner.

Then i started work on the clutch, mounted the pullys and made a bracket to hold at the correct height. Them welded into place . Should work. Now i have started on the pedal for the clutch and i am still hunting for the brakes.

Just for a bit of a giggle i thought i would put the pieces of the puzzle together on the ground for a quick look and also to work out the steering . I need to review how i was going to mount the axle as it turns out to be too high for the spindles. No big drama might just weld to the front of the frame as i have seen others do. Here is a couple of photos of the rough look.

Thats all for now, starting to make some progress now.

Driveline / Right foot clutch
« on: February 08, 2008, 03:47:14 am »
I have spent a long time reading the posts on here and am currently building a mower (see build thread).
I am about to build the clutch and i noticed that most of the mowers appear to run a right foot clutch. Is there a reason for this as normally the clutch is on the left foot . I had planned on a left foot clutch and right foot brake. Can you shed some light on this for me.

Cheers :bash:

Ok i think i need some help here, this is a picture of my rear drive set up and the engine runs in a clockwise direction. So whicch side do you put the tensioner, i have it on the non drive side beacuse i figure that would be best. What do you guys do or does it not make any diffrence.

cheers

Managed to get a bit of spare time at a mates workshop today and i tack welded in a frame and a jackshaft holding plate, now have to sort out the bearing carriers and shaft. Hopefully i have added these photos the correct way.

This is the motor that i need to do some work on to make more power, any suggestions?

Thats all for now have some more parts to find and planning to do. 8)

cheers guys,

I feel welcomed already. I forgot to mention the brakes , i intend to put a rear disc on from a pit bike or motobike. My thoughts with the pully size was because a need to run a jackshaft i can have a small pulley and have a tensioner that loads up the belt to the trans , i can then run a bigger pully on the jack shaft to allow more surface area and less slippage for the clutch.
As we dont have access to the parts you guys do i will have to make or adapt every thing i need. I am still deciding how to do the steering geometry, so many choices. I intend to try and optimise the handling as the mowers i saw here go fast but dont go round corners. The mower should end up about 100mm from the ground so centre on gravity is optimised and the chassis is very light . Its all just theory at the moment.  :woo:
