Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Rings for a 31CI OHV briggs?
« on: December 13, 2023, 04:24:56 pm »
Hiya,

I am currently rebuilding a 31ci Briggs single . Its a Non AVS .I have measured the bore at 90.55mm which is within spec. I bought some standard rings and when checking the end gap I had .8mm gap  and it should be about .2mm.

I am looking for a part number or supplier to get oversize rings to reduce the ring gap . Or can i just run them with a bigger gap .

the part number I had for oversize rings is 960166 but I cant find any available.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

Briggs Flathead / No spark from Alloy flywheel
« on: December 06, 2022, 03:51:27 pm »
Hiya,

I am currently building a 28ci flat head and wanted to put an allow flywheel on it. I got one from a friend that is not an ARC or commercially made  flywheel. I swapped the magnet from the original flywheel onto this alloy flywheel and now i have no spark from the original coil. So i put the original flywheel and magnet back on and i have spark again.  Any suggestions as to why when i swap the flywheel i loose spark?.

Coffee Shop / Permenent track Surface options
« on: January 14, 2018, 05:40:00 pm »
Hiya,

I am from New Zealand down under and i am looking for some information regarding the types of track surfaces you guys run on. We have a bit of land that has a track on it and have rolled and smoothed it out. We water during the day but still it seems to rut up pretty bad at the end of the day.

Do you guys have the same problems and just re roll and level or do you use clay like speedway tracks. or maybe somthing else.

We want to try and get a good surface to race on and i guess sombody on here has found the best way to prepare and maintain your tracks.

Our website to look at what we do here is http://www.boplmrc.co.nz/ and out facebook is https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=155977467863441&ref=br_rs

Cheers for any help

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Compression Ratio 31ci 501cc single
« on: September 01, 2014, 08:33:15 pm »
Hi Guys,

I am a little bit puzzeled by the compression ratio of my standard 31ci single.  I have read in a few places that it should be about 8.5 to 1. I have the head of another motor and used a syringe and perspex with a hole in it to fill the chamber and got 49cc (sorry i work in metric)

The specs for the engine online teel me its a 90.5 mm  bore and a stroke of 77.7 mm.

Therefore Volume of cylinder equals V and using my equation i end up with 499.560cc.

So Compression ration is swept volume plus head CC divided by the head volume or 499 + 49 + 548. / 49 =11.18.

So my comression ratio is 11.18 to 1. I know there is a bit to add for headgasket so it may drop a bit but not enough to go to 8.5 to 1.

I havent had the engine apart so i dont know if the piston comes flush with head or below. That would also make a differrence.

I may have missed somthing so maybe you could set me straight.

Cheers

Coffee Shop / Grid postions
« on: November 17, 2011, 03:21:35 pm »
Hi Guys,

Just wondered how you choose your grid postions for each race at a race meeting. Is it Random from a hat each race or predetermined by computor. Or maybe laptime. Just curious as we are trying to come up with a fair system.

Driveline / Clutch options
« on: April 13, 2011, 09:15:09 pm »
Hi Guys,
Just looking at some options for a clutch in a mower build.

Option 1 use the conventional belt system with a v belt

Option 2 use the same as above but use a multi rib belt for more grip (like an auto belt)

Option 3 use the centrifical clutch (not my fave choice due to little engine braking and no control)

Option 4 use a motorbike clutch and adapt to make work either on RAGB or rear axle.

My current perfered option is to use motorbike clutch (multiplate) on RAGB then run auto cambelt pullys and belt from engine to RAGB. This would have no slip at all and give precise clutch control.
I have seen this done on some of the UK mowers and just wondered if any one else has done it as well.
Im open to thoughts and suggestions. Obviously our racing and rules are much different to yours so what works over there may not over here.

Briggs Flathead / Rod to crank clearance?
« on: June 14, 2010, 05:48:03 am »
Hi Guys,

Can anybody tell me what sort of clearance you are running on a 28ci flatty between the big end of the rod and the crank, i think you also call it the oil clearance.I use plastigauge and tourque up the big end bolts to get a clearance. This motor has a few mods to it but will not be pulling high RPMs.

Driveline / Jack shaft powerloss?
« on: June 13, 2010, 02:34:06 am »
Hi Guys,

Having a bit of a ponder and wondered if anybody new the approximate power loss you would get from running a jackshaft . I thought that not running one and going straight to the gearbox would reduce any losses you may have. Am i correct im my thinking or does it not make any difference?
