I am new to the Lawn mower racing world and would first like to start with a drag racer. I have drag raced cars nearly 10 years but now have 2 little kids and cannot go as much as wanted. I have a mtd mower and would like to first upgrade the brakes and steering (for saftey) then move to hp. I have spent 2 days reading through the forums but there is not a lot of help in the drag racing world. There sounds to be a lot of people on here with more knowledge about these mowers than I could ever think of, just wondering if the steering and braking systems would be close to the same between round track racing and drag racing. Thank you in advance for any input.

I'm not a drag racer, but I think I can help!
Brakes would be very simmilar. You NEED good brakes and the hyd kart style brakes work very well.
Steering I'm not sure you would need as fast of steering as we use, and I'm not sure you would want it that way. If your a drag racer you know that you don't want quick steering. We need quicker steering because we have to turn to make laps.
I'd look in to the Jr Dragster parts for steering stuff. I know ARC makes a very nice rack and pinion set up for Jr. Dragsters. I'd recommend using one of them as you will NEVER wear it out and your kids would be safe.
Good luck
Paul

I would like to see a place for the drag racers here also. I would like to see someones rules/guidelines for their classes/divisions.
I think someone here said they were building a drag-strip track in Georgia. Would like to here more about that.

Well after doing some drag racing this past weekend on dirt I won't be doing no more. I knew it was a risk of braking parts when I did it but a tranny and chain later yall can have at it I run the same tranny for several season and have it well mounted, but to rip it apart internally in ponly a few passes NOPE I would rather roundy de round, More fun lasts longer and faster and have more fun with very seldom breaking anything.
-
we race on pavement but are fixing to change to dirt since our head person has raced on dirt. and we have never messed up any parts.i can post my classes and general rule here in a little while i don't have them on the computer only the printed sheet.

When ya got a twin cylinder like ours and dump the clutch at 6500 sevral times something is gonna give sooner or later. Some folks love it and thats great it was fun for me but just not my thing.

I know it was the runs we did doing the TV shoot at the real Drag Strip on the 8th mile. I kept getting braver and pulled a 74mph pass off before I had a wheel lock up. I told Tim I would loose it before the day was done. How it made thru the racing not sure. But the drags we did after ended it for sure. OH well was fun.

I was trying to get Ryan to take his to the dragstrip near here but we didn't do it yet and now it is winter
-
Ryan would have ran out of gear before the 1/8 mile so it wouldn't really prove anything... just would kill a good clutch...
I have seen some of these drag racing mower on youtube...... those guys are nuts...
-
Trust me I went thru all 5 gears doing this.... Thats what hurt the tranny. We did pass after pass after pass. Keep watch on your cable Proper TV. They will be airing a 30 minute show TV Made me do it. Ryan will also be on it. He is now a Super Star!!!! Yall be asking him for autographs next.
-
whens it airing?
-
George, thats probably why we haven't tore anything up yet. We don't have clutches. When we launch, were at idle. We hit 1-2-3 pretty quickly, then 4 & 5 in a 150 feet. But, the adrinelin starts flowing when you have to shut the thing down in 150 feet! Now thats when it get's exciting!
-
No clutches :noplease: , I don't like the sound of that right off the bat!!!! We won't discuss that been there done that.... :bash:

We would have changed the gear ratio,I know that it would have been at 10,000 rpm in about four hundred feet with the gear ratio it had

For there to be any consideration with having a Drag Racing section,
two things have to happen.
The first one is, there has to be well enough interest to have one.
The other is, there has to be someone considered an expert in this
type of racing to give advice and direction.

OK RACERCHCK51, the ball is in your court, lets find an expert because there seems to be enough intrest.

lets find one we really have alot of interest i can help what i know.
-
again no expert here but you can get the basic idea from the web site above. With the addition of lots of safety. I posted it to be a general idea. They do several races a year and several people come to watch. Again just a idea.
