Title: NEW ARMA Legal Super Sportsman
Post by: George Herrin on May 18, 2008, 04:40:27 am
As you can see I started a new project this weekend. The official owner (my Son Jacob Herrin) has been helping me. This is going to be an ARMA Super Sportsman mower. It will not be US legal. TWo reasons... it will use 6 inch wheels on all 4 corners and they would not approve of the tranny location. They want it under the fender. Now this mower will have a special built 700 for this chassis (not telling what I do on this one) and will also double as my outlaw twin for the Nov. races using Kart tires when Ryan Kerr of Ryker Racing comes down. It will have 4 wheel brakes, and have a BIG Indian on this one. This chassis will also be the class legal chassis I use for the speed record run. It should be very rigid and weigh no more than 250 lbs when done maybe even less. As you can see in the first picture The front axle beam is mounted with 13* caster angle and several other things are done as seen in pictures to come.

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010182.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010182.jpg)

here you see the tranny plate mounted. Yes I could have put it under the fenders but would have had to move them forward and raise them the latter would have defeated the purpose of using this chassis. IT being LOW. Also anyone familiar with this chassis the rear section is much higher than the front where engine is. SO I had to lower transmission for belt alignment which also will help keep center of gravity lower. I then used the metal I cut out to box in the area to look better and keep dirt out as much as possible.

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010183.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010183.jpg)

In this picture you see I have the rear cassette mounts weld in place. The axle is in the original location just moved up into the frame. Also the lower part of the rear frame dropped down this has been removed (cut square with rest of frame) so mower can be dropped and have that 4" minimum all the way around.

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010184.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010184.jpg)

This picture shows the bottom view of the tranny plate mounted and the strentghening I have done in the rear chassis box area. All tubing is 3/4 thin wall. When I say thin wall I mean it. With a flux core welder you best be careful it will blow right thru it if ya not careful or inexperianed. The idea is to stiffen chassis yet keep it light as possible. The squre tubing even though thin wall is strong enough to do what I want.

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010185.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010185.jpg)

Moving forward you can see how the tubing follows the lines of the chassis. I notched the tubing bending and welding it together and to the frame to keep it all one solid piece front to back

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010186.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010186.jpg)

A better look at the rear box and axle area and how I boxed it in

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010187.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010187.jpg)

From the rear looking down at the tranny plate

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010188.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010188.jpg)

You can see here how the fender will fit with tranny in place. Fender has been notched to clear back of tranny and chainto pass thru. A gaurd will be made to cover all exposed chain.

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010189.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010189.jpg)

This last picture shows tranny in place in relation to fender and dash in its location. Still plenty of walk thru room in this chassis. Also I wanted to keep the same belt length I use on all the box frame chassis and this also dictated tranny location. More to come later.

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010190.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010190.jpg)

Will the seat be bolted directly to the upper cross tubes beneath the fenders, or will you put in a plate similar to your other mower for seat adjustment?

Post by: George Herrin on May 18, 2008, 11:12:28 am
The front top bar will be removed its simply tacked in place to hold everything in the correct location while I weld everything in place. I will graph a seat mount into the fender as I did on the PRO-X for seat adjustment.

So far so good. Something I'm wondering about is how well does the thin walled tubing hold up? I've seen several people here using it. Is there any flex in the chassis? I imagine this works out really well for a stamped chassis which uses the form of the stamping as reinforcement itself.

Been using it for 3 years now and no problems yet because of it. And my chassis are very stiff

Why the 6 inch wheels on rear?
Title: Re: NEW ARMA Legal Super Sportsman
Post by: George Herrin on May 19, 2008, 09:54:35 pm
Because I can get it lower. Because its different, because it goes against everything I have done for the past 9 years, a new challenge heck there;'s a bunch of reasons.

Lol, Ok I was figuring "rotating mass" or one of them technical things.
So will just call it "Mower Sports advancement testing"

Your build is looking real nice George. Those are currently the best frames out there at the moment in my opinion. That thin wall tubing will be just fine and very stiff once welded in, mowers don't need anything any heavier than that.
One thing I did do to my chassis this year is re-enforce the rear box from the top to as far as I could ahead running down on an angle keeping under the fenders. I found that the rear section did some twisting on a hard packed race track entering the corner.
The step by step build and pics are really nice, keep up the good work! man that machine is going to be a rocket when you get that BIG hp on there.

I'm running 6" Burris wheels all around on mine. You will be very pleased with how that works out if you configure your ratios just right.

OK anyone got a 5/8 steering knuckle that will turn at a 45* angle.... I need one the one I have won't turn at that sharp an angle.

George I run one of these on my twin mower it should make a 45* turn.  http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2008052022263065&item=1-2839&catname= (http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2008052022263065&item=1-2839&catname=) It isn't the strongest one I have found though.  On my OHV single I use one of these  http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMPXNO=1871028&PMT4NO=43233602 (http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMPXNO=1871028&PMT4NO=43233602) I have a brand new one of these at the shop it will not make as tight of bend as the first one but it is alot stronger.  I will check tomorrow afternoon to see if the one I have will make a 45* turn.
George I have also seen a few of these on mowers http://www.desertkarts.com/item80856.ctlg (http://www.desertkarts.com/item80856.ctlg)  they look pretty stout.

I think I will grind / massage mine and see if I can get it to turn. 75.00 for one ouch. That or I will go back to a straight column.

Is the one in your twin stout enough?  Not being cheap......but theres a $70 difference in price?

Post by: Mowindown on May 20, 2008, 11:55:30 pm
I have ran it over a year now and it hasnt let me down yet.  I do take a old intertube and make me a strip and wrap it around my steering shaft and over my universal to make sure the pins don't fall out of the blocks in the universal.  So far so good.

George the last universal I posted comes off a sand rail.  They are real tough and I think I have seen them make the 45* turn you need.  The only bad thing is you would either have to spline your steering shaft or weld them on to the shaft.  For twenty three buck they are pretty tough
George if you can't get it to turn let me know and I will get you this universal I have.

I have one here with three races on it, it is drilled for 3/4" but I could tig some chrome moly adapters in it to get it down to 5/8" for you and throw it in the box coming your way.   I owe you a favour for the carb remember?

Post by: Old Goat on May 21, 2008, 01:57:57 pm
George, why couldn't you weld or attach 2 of them together, like on a front driveshaft for an older 4WD Chevy. Then each one would only have to bend 22.5 degrees. Oh... and I agree with Ryan about the extra square tubing in the rear going down at an angle. Looks like a weak spot. I was going to say something the other day, but I didn't want to say anything on account of you bein Superman and all!

George, if you are still lookin for some knuckles, I may have one for you in the garage. Otherwise I have ordered a complete steering shaft from a yamaha rhino then shortened it to what I needed. This is what I have done on goliath, actually I had to use two shafts. One on top and one on the bottom. Complete shaft is 82.00, but I'll sell one to you for 65.00,plus shipping.I'll check later for the one I have at home and post a pic to see if it will work for ya.

OK, How's this... I think you oughta take some 2"x2"x1/4" wall tubing and put some X-braces under the seat because I know there is gonna be a lot of swayin & sideforces on the seat! I seen the picture of you in that TUTU!!!  Ha Ha Ha.
Oh... by the way, I put a double spring on the intake last night. I'll let you know how it works. Thanks, Jim

Don't  but, I use a 3/4" impact swivel for a knuckel.  I figureed it can take the kinda pressure the gun puts on it, then it should stand up to steering shaft.

Thats OK I am Any how made a bit more progress over the week. Thios will be it for a few days. As you can see the dash is done Steering is installed and goes thru its original holes at both ends... But it now has a nice rake  at the top that put the wheel very comfortably in a posistion more like a car.... Here I am checking the feel and angle...

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010191.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010191.jpg)

This gives you an overall view of the steering setup. I used a front wheel hub at the frame, a go kart column bearing at top of lower shaft then the knuckle, the used an ec moun t and spherical bearing on top shaft under dash and made the mount using one of the linkage rods from the old parts....

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010197.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010197.jpg)

This gives you an up close view of the steering overall.

(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010199.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010199.jpg)

I had to slide the axle in and see what it would look like with the tires setup I will use at the November event and the trip to cananda to race ole Ryan.... These are QRC (burris Tires) 12x9x6 on 9.5 rims Nothing but tire back there.. LOVE it. I found these from a karter, 3 of the above tires and 4 12x8x6 Burris grooved tires all in just as good of shape 7 tires overall 75.00. Pretty sweet deal. Find me some fronts now and I'll be set. May use a set of the 12x8x6. Not sure yet. For class legal racing it'll have turf ,asters all the way around.

I really like how the engine location is sunk into the chassis. Every little bit helps getting the weight closer to the ground. I also noticed that the engine is offset a bit the RIGHT...is that going to hurt you for left side weight?  It may not be enough to make a difference.

That U-joint in the column makes it a lot nicer to drive. I did that on my Bolens. I used a 3/4" rod for the column & a U-joint off a Honda ATV driveshaft. I welded a 5" long piece of 1-1/2" exhaust pipe with some gussets through the original hole in the frame. I just had to enlarge it a little. 1-3/8" OD wheel bearings fit real nice inside the exhaust pipe. I used a flanged bearing top and bottom of the 5" pipe to support the lower section of the steering column, with the U-joint right above. That way I didn't need an extra bearing in the middle of the upper section of column. The lower section is straight up & down through the frame, which makes the steering arm underneath go straight front & back when you are turning the wheel. It works real well.

Her is a pic from underneath. I don't have one from the top.

You got a fantastic deal on those tires. They usually cost $50 APIECE! Anyhow, those tires make a gigantic difference out on the track. I have the same size and used them on the front and the back. They do make the ride a heck of a lot more bouncy though.

I will actually move it to the left to center it up or even offset a bit in the frame to the left. Rules only say it has to maintain original crankshaft orientation. Meaning go thru the same hole, doesn't say where in that hole....

I built an old White last year that had an identical frame and rear fenders. I really like those rear fenders, you can get the seat down really low. I moved the motor over to the left about an inch or inch and a half, so the crank was centered in the frame. I had to take a 3lb hammer to the floor pan to lower the left side a little and then plated the bottom with 1/8" steel for all 4 mounting bolts. The fellow I gave it to races with us and it seems to be working fine.

George looks like Rod gave you one of our Oeltra shirts from the picture of you sitting on the race machine.

So George if you come to Canada to race Ryan I may want to take in that race depending on when and where the race is. Oeltra and Woo races can be very far apart.

Well The chassis is done and is ready for paint. Here is an over all view of the bottom with belt setup.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010001-1.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010001-1.jpg)

Clutch pedal mounted and also removable. The linkage arm was weld to a 5/8 lock collar and pedal drilled and tapped and instead of using set screw I use a bolt screwing into the lock collar right into the pedal. The linkage arm is an extra arm from an azuza steering column kit.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010002-2.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010002-2.jpg)

I used a 5/8 steel bushing and weld it to bottom of running board this gives the pedal good support and allows less vibration and noisy rattling.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010003-2.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010003-2.jpg)

Using an EC billet clutch you can see how its mounted and the rear pulley and belt in place.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010004-3.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010004-3.jpg)

Here is the finished chassis. I used a set of kart side bars for side impact protection on the ankles and legs. As low as this thing is most grills will still get me. Both side bars are easily removed with 3 bolts in case the tech guys do n ot approve these.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010006-1.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010006-1.jpg)

Rear view shows the rear bumper ARMA allows and recomends, I recomend a rear bumper if the rules allow it. Keeps someone from climbing up on you in a rear impact. This bumper is one hitchhiker is making and selling to the public. After seeing his pro-x twisted and mangled after the Wilson wreck, his bumper wasn't bent. Its light yet strong. Also you can see how I modified the right side bar for clutch pedal travel.

view of right side of mower if you look at the side of the hood near the rear in the recess area, you see a screw. This is a zus fastner. First time I ever used one on a mower. Makes for a nice solid way to lock sheet metal yet be quick and easy to remove.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010009.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010009.jpg)

and yes it has deck halves as my other builds weld to the running board.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010010-1.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010010-1.jpg)

This is the other side deck halve.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010011-1.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010011-1.jpg)

Too give an idea on how low this mower is Jake my 11 year old son (he owns this mower) stood beside it. The seat will sit in the recess of the fender will only be the metal pan of the seat with side braces. It will have some dense foam/rubber padding in the seat and back area. As you can see the driver will be LOW.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_P1010013-1.jpg) (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/P1010013-1.jpg)

Now this chassi is complete minus fuel tank brake lines chain shifter, seat, wiring and engine is complete minus heads, intake carbs, flywheel and tins and exhaust. we stood it on end and balance it on a scale (bathroom) and weighed this chassis and as you see for yourself its only 215lbs. It is gonna fall under my predicted 260lbs easily I feel. So now off to the painter, I got a guy dying to paint this thing so he can have at it.

Ron I presume your term Sick is a good thing. My knowledge of the modern terminology is not the greatest. It has far exceeded my expectations as to the way it has turned out. I simply love it myself. and Jake is even happier than I about it. His terminology for explaining how it looked when we rolled it out on the grass bank for pictures and I quote...... Dad, that thing looks TUFF!!! You won't stand a chance against me. End Quote. You see IF I get the motor done he is gonna race it against me and Ryan in Canada. I know he won't drive it hard enough to beat me but he has heart and as long as he is having fun thats one of the main reasons I do this. That Chassis will be the Class Legal Chassis used for the Land speed attempt also.

Nice looking build George. Having a mower that low to the ground actually makes it almost a pleasure to drive because you don't have to worry as much about flipping.Put a nice big wheel on that sucker and you won't even get sore.

By the way, I wonder if there's some reason why we all wind up painting our mowers insane colors. Everyone in my group paints theirs fluorescent green, pink, bright blue, and Fluorescent orange ( mine).

Yes they will I will have to drop the cassettes to do so which will raise the rear app. 1/4 to 1/2" It's true purpose is the Texas mile as a class legal mower. SO I designed and built it around kart tires. Idon't care if it ever runs mower tires on it. It will for one event to pass tech at a national points race. This is so it will be a class legal mower. But the speed run  will be on Kart tires. And yes MOPAR is good.....

Just looking at that machine again..... and yes its pretty cool, like I said that machine will fit right in with our outlaw class up here, hopefully you only have to put the turf masters on for one race to keep from getting hurt. Can't wait until August to see this machine and shoot the breeze with you guys in person.

I was going just a single color Yellow darker yellow like a golden yellow, BUT the guy wanting to paint it mentioned purple and yellow and since this mower he liked it thus the purple. See I built it Jake owns it and I am just a driver for it till he comes of age here. He will drive it in Canada. Hed drives mine all the time now.

I can't help but to notice how you say that he "owns" it. When you say that he owns it do you mean that he really and truly does own it?

Sorry but I guess it does not seam normal to me. I said I own the mower I race at a car show and my dad spoke up and yelled "you don't own   :censored: thing" .  I am building a mower now with only my money so I can be the true owner  :D

By the way, that is one AWSOME ride Jake's got there

Hey G man....Any chance on some measurements or are they pretty much the same???
Title: Re: NEW ARMA Legal Super Sportsman
Post by: George Herrin on July 01, 2008, 06:54:14 am
Yes this is Jakes ride, his lock stock and Barrel. Only condition is he cannot sell it. And it isn't a toy it's a race machine and he will treat it as such. I don 't have to tell him that he doesn't even play with his super stock. And I will drive it some.  We are trying for two events this season with it. Canada event August 9/10 and November event Outlaw Twin class November, 15/16th.
You see many folks with their kids act like soccer dads I call it they PUSH the kids hard yell at em when they don't do it like they think they should. In Jakes case he is his own man on the track. I never tell him how to drive, I never tell him what to do. NOW if Jake asks me a specific question I give an opinion and ask what does he think. I want him to think on his on to react by his self with out having to rely on what I say... Its important as a racer he makes his own name does his own thing in other words be his own man NOT hey thats George's son. Any respect he gets on the track from other drivers he earns on his own NOT because he is my son. And I must say for an 11 year old boy he is a very mature driver, a very good sportsman and I am very proud of him.
Hey G man....Any chance on some measurements or are they pretty much the same???

depends on the measurement you want Steve.. I don't hide anything. Its at the painters right now so measuring anything is out of the question.

Seems to have some "Northern Flair"...been taking note of what them thare Canucs been doin'?
Great looking mower, I have a rare form of color blindness that makes most purples just ugggggly, but that color looks good, and the pearl must be deep, as you can't usually see it in photos very well and that shows up good. I bet it's much better in person. Love the nerfs!

Ok, you passed the test, you may now call yourself a builder :P

Tires are mounted on 9-1/16 wide home made (EC) bead locks. They were made 15 years ago. Carrol dug em out for me.

And yea I ain't much on purple but it does snap with the pearl.

And if it would get me a Royal Purple sponsorship I would take it. IF not I will stay will my Walmart Synthetic oil.

Well I wanna run the kart tires it was built around BUT only time will tell. I kept loosing the right rear on the present ride, so I am trying something different. It was built more specifically for the land speed attempt w/kart tires. Has to be class legal in order to do so it has to pass tech at a national points race thus it has to have mower tires on it. I didn't wanna change anything to fit them so I used wide rims to widen and lower the tire hieght to fit the rear. it will race the one time and then any racing from that point will be where it is allowed to run kart tires. As for the seat I wanted back preotect just incase it is MUCH lower than anything else I have ever had. A grill in the back would hurt.

We like to never got a set to bead on 8" wheels, how did you ever spread em out like that?
Are the beadlocks inside and out?
Title: Re: NEW ARMA Legal Super Sportsman
Post by: George Herrin on July 30, 2008, 10:28:41 pm
Well originally they were designed for right side /outside and left side/inside But the spacing is equal so you can turn the wheel either way and it fit the same thus using the beadlock inside or outside. With the one bead lock it makes it fairly simple. I used a 5 gallon plastic bucket cut it down the side using it like a wrap band around the tire using a rachet strap I tightened it which wrapped the bucket tightly spreading the side out and then  simply pushed the rim in to get the last bit if any of that made sense.

WOW!! Using a bucket....who'd a thunk it!! That's gotta be a record all it's own right there putting those tires on that wide of a wheel....forget land speed record! When it's done you'll have to get some pics with those tires on it. 1" of tire touching the ground on each side of the wheel that's already bald!

couple action Shots from Saturday Night... This thing is wicked off the corner as you can tell it totes the front tires easily.

That is one awesome mowchine!! It was great to meet everyone who traveled to the fair in Union City to race. I have to say that everyone did an outstanding job. All the racers that I got to talk to were very nice and freely shared tips on building a racer and on joining the BAMA-TENN  chapter of ARMA, which I intend to do. It is great to see so much information shared on the forum also.It will make building a racer a lot easier.

I don't think that tire was on the rim... I've been looking and looking at it and it looks like the sidewall is in the middle of the rim..

George how do you like the 13x6.50x6 tires all around it? I was thinking about building my sportsman with 13x6.50x6 on 6x7 wheels
at all 4 corners. thanks and the tractor looks great.

So far I like it. Traction is unreal not sure why but it got awesome forward traction off the corners. I would not do it with a beefy twin without bead lock wheels.

You said that you are running a "Big Indian" in this. What size is it?

might want to slide that seat forward an inch or two. but i know, you like keeping the weight over the rear for better traction.

Don't have an inch to move it.

Well if your not going on a food binge and you can't move your seat
then I guess you need wheelie bars!!! :woo:

Looks like a lot of fun but kinda hard to counter steer!

Could you run that type of chassis with the tranny being exposed in the uslmra? Could the tranny be under the fender anymore and still have room for sprockets, Then make a tranny cover.

With the USLMRA the Tranny would have to be completely under the fender. Depending on class would also have to run 8" wheels and tires. It can be done I know several that have. I personally wanted a shorter belt and did not want things so tight under there. It requires slightly moving fenders up and forward just a bit.

When I was trying to put the tranny under the fender I couldnt get any room for the chain and sprocket. I was wanting to run a 50 tooth on the axle.

Thats what I like about the ARMA rules they allow a bit of imagination in how one does something. You can contact Tom Ast in Sebring Fla. I know they built one under the fender. he might have some pictures that could help you out.
