Driveline / Re: RAGB- chain or belt??

Back in the '70s, there was aproduct from Castrol I think,
it was a dark gray spray on that left a dry residue.
Used it on street, dirt, and sand.
Some stuff stuck tto it but not much, in my uses it worked
very well.

Tecumseh Engines / Re: Tec OV490ea
« on: April 26, 2011, 01:08:39 pm »
Finally got an answer about these engines.
Took a lot of calling around but I did get a resolve.
These engines Tecumseh OV490ea sold by Small Engine Wharehous
are the last remaining engines manufafactured by Tecumseh before
they went out of production. They are the same as the OVH175 engine.

Where are you getting the bolts?
Are they properly rated, sounds like ungraded stock.

If there are any measurable gains, that's a good thing.
It's like George said at least one time, little things add up.
If you are in a close race, it just may make a difference.
The choice is always up to you.

These have the same dimentions as the OHV175, they were used by MTD some labeled at 15.5 HP and used with 17.5 HP label on the 42" cut mower.

One of the slickest front axles, I have seen is the set up from Grasscar Racing.
Look it up before you mave a choice.

Tecumseh Engines / Tec OV490ea
« on: April 15, 2011, 07:18:35 pm »
Tecumseh OV490ea made in Brazil, is it the same as the ohv17 Tec engine?
By its dimentions it is but it does not have the same manufacture plant.
Is it as good or not, that is the question?

From my understanding yes it is machineable.
The recomendation is to machine first, treat and polish last.

Coffee Shop / Re: Exhaust size
« on: April 13, 2011, 06:29:26 pm »
Building on a Tec OV490 some call it OHV175.
What size exhaust to start with and how do you get an ell that clost to the head.
It only has a couple of inches to the deck.
Thanks!
Some years ago you wrote an article for tuning post either a magazine or web site.
It was about exhausts their sizing and fabrication.
Saw a reference to it searching exhaust. An old post from 07 or 08.

Looking for info on exhaust, I came accross a reference to an article or a post by George.
It was something called exheaust size / tuning post.
Can someone tell me how to find it?
By the way if you ever do a search for George Herrin on Google Be prepared for a flood.
He has written articles for many different scorces and been quoted by so many,
after several pages I gave up.

Coffee Shop / Re: Cryogenic hardening of engine parts

Cryogenic treating of parts is more of a toughening reather than hardening.
Like oak is a fine grained wood is stronger than pine a corser grain.
The process alligns and tightens the particles of the metal, making it tougher.
Much like a forged part is tougher than a case part.
Not like surface hardness, it works through the whole part.
If there are weaknesses in the part it won't cure that.
