Title: Mod x 17 ohv roller rockers
Post by: Wiscoracer on November 14, 2020, 04:46:01 pm
I’m building a mod x ohv170 and I had purchased a set of roller rocker that I believe George herrin and made . I had been through the Tecumseh part of this forum front to back roughly a dozen times during my very recent tvt build . And I had seen that there is machining needed to be done to the head for this style roller rocker to be installed but Nothing was mentioned on what needed to be done machining wise . If any of you guys had run this style and know what’s needed to be done I would like to know what’s needed to be done . I will post a picture of said style rollers

I think I would contact EC carb. That's where George would have made them. It can't hurt to ask.

That does look like Burt's work, now that you mention it.

Who made this style then ?

Most likely Steve Bertrand, he made most all the custom Indian parts

That style in the above picture is what Bert would have ran. He didn?t actually machine them. A good friend of his helped with the design and did the machining. Those were only available through Bert and he would contact his guy (can?t recall his name). You should be able to pull a part number off the bearing and order some to replace what?s in them. If the rollers are flat, you can machine a new set out of some drill rod. I have all the info stashed away somewhere and could find it if still needed. I had a set that Bert and Ed had set me up with for my single OHV at one point that needed rebuilt.

You could try to get ahold of REDLINE, he drove for Burt, he might know. I know he pop's on here once and a while.

Thanks for the info guys , I ended up making the set that was first pictured work . And I also worked with a company to have a line of roller rockers made for theses engines and fit under stock valve covers with no spacer is valve cover modification. The race season hasn?t started here in Wisconsin yet but they seem to be holding up fantastically, I will report back after the first few races .

After a full season on these roller rockers they held up fantastically and showed no signs of wear and caused absolutely no problems . These things are a 10/10 and just flat out work Awsomely.

Al, George built my first Indian single. Then I got hooked up with Ed and Bert. They were both very instrumental in helping my stuff run well before I went to a MWSC Kohler. George?s engine made good power and was smooth. Though the Wisconsin stuff was an absolute kick in the pants on the bottom end and mid range.

I really miss those guys, Bert, and George. I still talk to Ed regularly! He and I have a lot in common, we both are career mechanic's and are not fond of service writers! LOL
