Title: Possible fuel issue
Post by: austinandtina on July 26, 2015, 12:51:39 am
Hey guys I have a built 17hp tecumseh that I got from another hey mow guy and took it to its first race and it would just spit and sputter. Has an ec carb and even in nuetral I can Rev it up let off throttle and as soon as I try to get back into it she wants to die and I am at a loss due to not knowing much about the mower

I did take the float bowl off and it didn't seem to have dirt in it there is no fuel filter on it so idk if that might be causing a issue also haven't drained fuel and replaced yet

What color jet and emulsion tube?
What exactly constitutes "built" in your case?
From what I gather from your post, it will increase rpm, it just bogs and has difficulty doing so? At all rpm ranges, or just from low rpm?

Blue emulsion tube and it acts as if it is hitting a governer then after that when I let off and go to giver again it is just falling on its face

I took a look at the float bowl today and it did have a bit of white goo on the outside of the jet I sprayed that clean but possibly needs a good carb cleaning

check your jet o-ring and  the one on the emulsion tube, actually just replace them and get spares...
Running a billet flywheel and briggs coil, or stock flywheel and tec coil? The tec coils don't do well with high rpm, and could be weak, at what rpm are you hitting the "govenor"?

Billet flywheel with steel ring and briggs coil right around 4 4/5

Have you checked your valve lash? Possibly weak valvespring and floating the valves...if you feather into it you can get a little more than at wot?  Also, are you running a fuel pump? If not you need to be.

Well I cleaned carb real good drained tank and refreshed with some 112 and adjusted the needle to fatten up the mixture a smidgen and 2nd gear will at wot around my mini track will lift the front end up and down so idk about 3rd yet don't have a long enough area that's smooth to test but seems like it is better

This motor is built as far as you can build one. Redline  knows this motor. And it was a fuel issue. Now if he can get the gearing right on the short track they run, he will be very hard to beat.

I have been told where it came from now.
Austin, you are on the right track. The difference in altitude from where it was living to where it is now will require some carb tweaks, like you are doing.
Unless it's been changed, thats not an EC carb. It's a Bertrand.
Unless you like spending the money, you dont have to run it on 112. Mix it 50/50 with premium, NO ETHANOL.
Also, unless changed, it's my cylinder head and one of our Isky cam's in it.

And see I had thought about the altitude change as well and I guess I over thought it lol and as of right now it has a full tank of leaded 112. can I mix leaded with unleaded 93?

Never heard of me? That has both an upside and a downside, mostly upside.

The carb is the same, just the bowl is different. And when it came from up north, I had the same issue off the bat. Altitude may be the key here. But once this kink is worked out, she's a beast!!

Okay cool I can't wait for my next race to really see what she's got my gearing will prolly be off but with it running right il have a better idea of what to change it to
