Title: Heymow Hints: What did you learn from 2010
Post by: EelRiverRacer on October 25, 2010, 09:01:32 am
Since most of us (excluding the Brothers of the Blade and the Floridians) are relatively wrapped up for the season, what did you learn from 2010? Did it go as expected?

Aaron
(I promise this one heymow hints will make it in).

Been awhile ago but someone this year made the comment I was getting old a slowing down.... I got news for whomever it was, I don't remember but I haven't slowed down at all, the competition is finally catching up. Winning is not easy anymore. The level of competition has grown tremendously. With all the online how to articles I have posted over the years and all the over the counter go fast parts available to the everyday racer, many can now build or buy a top runner first time out of the box. Its a great sport we are a part of and the progression of it has simply amazed me. After 12 years in the sport its nice to see the level of competition where it is and to know I have been a big part of it.

I learned how important your friends and family are when your racing mowers!  It would not have been the year that it was without them.  I also learned that I need a new chassis, and more motor work but they were already in the works!

I have to agree with George....the competition is getting tougher every year and this year was the largest boost in performance we have seen. Which is a good thing, at least as far as the sport goes, we are quickly becoming legitimate racing in the public's eye. We are shredding the "You got to be kidding me....RACING LAWNMOWERS?" moniker. Kart racers and dirt racers are getting interested and shall I say some a bit envious? I'll continue to be like George even if it's not in our best racing interest we will continue to help our fellow racers beat us for after all it's all about having a good time and progressing our sport. LOL.

I've learned that in the end its all about having fun and its easy to loose sight of that during race season. Thankfully I race with a great bunch of guys, and when we travel we get to meet a lot of great people. When you stand back and look at everything, the sport of lawnmower racing is like no other and I'm proud to be a part of it.
This year the level of competition in the WOO outlaw class was unbelievable, I never had to work this hard for a win. I started this year out with a completely new machine - engine, clutch, brakes, tires, Midwest Super Cub  sponsor, and so on. This is what keeps things exciting, the learning curve is still pretty steep the faster we go otherwise things become boring. We just keep pushing things over what we used to think was the limit and progress on. Like George mentioned, nobody is getting slower, everyone is getting much faster. I'm looking forward to a new 2011 season.

Just when you think everything is going fine, something breaks.

I've learned that even if real life sidelines you from the sport for a couple of years, since about 2005 for me, the disease that is lawn mower racing stays in your blood and you can't escape it.

The slightest exposure to other infected individuals causes your blood to start boiling again and the itch comes all over your body.  Even if it happens in the late summer/early fall, you can't wait to get a wrench in hand and go into the garage to try to massage out the the twitches, the uncontrollable urges to grab your 'air-shifter' and start 'rrrrummmmm, RRRUMMM!'ing through the gears...

It twists all of common sense about... how else could you explain all of my modern cars, two of my motorcycles, along with my 62 year old Pontiac, my 41 year old Honda and my 30 year old electric car sitting out in the rain while my parts of my someday to be built racer sit in the middle of my four car garage protected from the elements???

If I look at something on my mower and think to myself, that shouldn't be a problem, it will be...half way through the feature!

Well, there you have it. Recent studies indicate that  60% of all statistics can be made to say whatever you want them to say 75% of the time, and I broke it!

If it didn't break and you didn't win, you probably weren't running it hard enough

What did I learn from the 2010 season? Hmmm. If you go and race at the National level you better have some horsepower. And be ready to be interviewed at any time. Fox Sports caught me right before my race at the Finals. Kinda calmed me down though. Good times after the races and Great people to finish the evening out with. Rooster, Easy Parcheesy, Eelriverracer, the Mikulas and all of the MILMRA group, all new great friends. Bring on 2011 and lets top it!!

In all fairness, Ed, I've only seen you race on two occasions. Technically, the dipstick broke itself the first time out, and the second time, the straw bale was clearly in the wrong position on the outside of the track. So the strawbale technically broke the twin's hood ... and the Mowmentum decal!

With two new members of the Deere Herd nippin at my heals to get their builds done, I learned "Patience". Patience and humility...

...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our *four*...no... *Amongst* our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again.

Sorry, this post broke out into a Monty Python skit...

As I was saying, It was a good year. We picked up two new members, brought our mower count up. (we now have 9 mowers running) This is the first year I went backwards in the points. I finished somewhere around the 6th or 7th spot last year. Im not even close to the top ten this year. But... eh, thats racing. The up side of the year is, I have made new friends, seen old friends, and have been able to even make some laugh. I hope that on my tombstone I can say, "Atleast they got a giggle out of it."

With all this talk of Ed King breaking stuff I just have one question why couldn't he break something when he was in front of me. that was a great race I had a blast maybe next time we can be racing for first, I would still be happy finishing second to ya.

I also learned this year that if Ed didn't break it, his brother-in-law Troy did. Sometimes they both broke it. Everytrhing going Fumar.
