Hi
I like to be a little conservative and I only like to turn my some where around 7500.  It really depends on valve springs.  You probably can get it in the low 8k range but why.  It is already maxed out on power and it's just a lot of stress.  I have a billet motor  like yours that has been doing this for over 8 years

It's always best to overdrive an 700 transmission.  Increases durability and reliability.

There was never a horizontal shaft intek.  I know there have been some try it. A vanguard has an horizontal shaft and some of there parts are interchangeable

Tecumseh Engines / Re: Tecumseh build price

For most people the Tecumseh isn't feasible to build.  Parts are hard to find.  Although they can really run.  It's not off the shelf parts.

Ed
Mine on a John Deere is one inch.  My clutch wasn't a pain to remove but a pain to keep on.

The blocks are different also you wouldn't have the mounting bolts.  Unless you mounted it by using the bottom pan.  Your correct the heads would have to be drilled.

The 38 will have a round intake port and the others have a "D" shaped intake port.  Most vanguard heads will have there cubic inch marked in the valve cover area.

There are steel gears for the 700 for Both the bevel gears and the drive gears also. I think I have them saved.  As that member that shared this information all got deleted, as they must of figured no would ever need it

I agree with Ed the durability of the 820 is much better.  The 017 kit is getting very hard to find or get guys to part with.  There a little heavy in the rear of the Mower but don't get me wrong a great alternative to the 700.

What are you using for lube?  That might be part of the problem.  You never want a chain tight.

Well I guess thats why some people spend all thair time on the comp. Insted of in the engine room or on the Dyno. That question is always ansered at the track and not on the keyboard!!! Ron.

It takes some one that has broken parts to find out where the failing point is.  A computer program just tells you what is "ideal" not real world.  I also learn something new ever time I talk to Ron .

So, rocket Ron, you can take a 31" Briggs, required to run as cast head, stock springs, pushrods and valves, Stock rocker arms, cam, valves, crank, piston, rings, intake, carburetor, ignition system, and say you have a proven combination.  I'm not doubting what you can do without rules, but the class I'm in has plenty of them.  Even if you had a magic bullet for that combination, I'd not expect you to release the cat,   My guess is, you won't waste your time with something you can't sell parts on.  I'm trying to learn, if you've no productive input, you are of no help, therefore useless to what I'm doing.

On a stock motor the cam is what will always choke it up.  That's why the rules dictate a stock cam.  There are small things that will help but the things they do to a motor with a aftermarket cam won't work with a stock cam, may even hurt performance .
