Chassis / Re: mower steering
« on: February 04, 2009, 09:34:16 am »
Really no reason that set up can't be modified even with the front end welded in place. It may require moving the steering arm on the front end from top to bottom, but the same through-frame steering shaft and pitman arm concept that George uses on his mower should work there without a great deal of hassle. Check out George's builds in the build section and give it some thought. Those gears on your steering are not alotogether cool in racing; they're slower than direct steering, they're subject to wear and tear, and the gears themselves can and do break  leaving you without steering.

It may be a Peerless 500; those I believe were offered in 3 speed, and the case is essentially identical to the 700, however there are some slight variations in the two. There's a thread around here someplace comparing the 700 to the 500, where I offered pictures of both side by side. The 500 is a solid transmission, however I don't believe parts are available for those any longer, and internally there are a substantial number of differences in the 500 and 700 internally. As best I recall the ID tag on the 500 was riveted on the side of the case in place of normal location on the 700s.

Somewhere way back in time, Peerless did make a 700 3 speed. Question has arisen on the board here before, and in discussion a parts diagram was offered on that model. They do not however show up on the regular list of Peerless 700s that we normally reference herein. That one instance is the only place I've seen reference material on them.

Likewise, some model 700s may have incorporated spacers to alter the typical Peerless 5 speed to run only 3 speeds, by OEM request. The only way to tell there would be to disassemble and clean it up to see.

If you do have one of the 700 3 speeds, it would be cool to see pictures of the internal components to see how they compare to the regular 700.

Briggs Flathead / Re: 16.5 (42) compression
« on: December 07, 2008, 11:37:49 am »
All the wiring harness is worthless unless someone's fixing their grass cutting machine, for racing application you'll need the solenoid. Otherwise you can wire the ignition switch in if you plan on doing car shows and such, a simple in-line fuse that you can pull is a better option however. If you want to hook up brake lights, you can save the safety switch as well.

As for value, if it runs, compression is good, no known defects, around $250 - $300 on E-Bay. Have seen them go as low as $150, have seen them go as high as $350. Problem is... it's gonna cost you over a hundred bucks to ship it!

Not a direct swap, you'll have to do some machine work to fit the bearings in.

Chassis / Re: B/P Ground Clearance Rule ?
« on: November 16, 2008, 03:40:13 pm »
Thanks for clearing that up for me , i was going off of class rules not general mower requirements.

Thanks again.

Not a problem, glad to help... occasionally some of that stuff sneaks into play in several areas of the rules. Ground clearance is constant across all classes, so it's a general mower requirement. Wheelbase, on the other hand, varies amongst the classes, so that would be covered in the class specs. Or, in some cases of this nature, it may be covered in general requirements, then amended in class specs.

One just needs to remember both sections are there to giude you, and both sections do contain specs for your mower. If you don't find it in the specs for your class, be sure to look at General Requirements as well, if it's common amongst several classes, it'll be hiding in there. (o;?

Not all capitals though... Just insert them where appropriate, as a matter of proper application of grammatical correctness in use of the English language!

We do not text arround here, convey your thoughts in structured sentence form, so we don't all have to try and translate them.

Briggs Flathead / Re: ARC questions on EC site
« on: November 13, 2008, 11:56:15 am »
Nope it's not, it was designed for that piston...
Yep...it is strong enough...
Nope you don't have to worry...
Just order it with the rod...
Yep it'll work with stock crank.

9
"Anti-Vibration System" - it would be that big brick floating around inside the crankbase suspended from the Crank, and attached by a short connecting rod, commonly referred to as the Dog Bone, since it's about the size of a chicken drumstick bone, and it's shaped sorta like a leg bone out of a critter.

"Reasonable" is a relevant thing. Relevant meaning... How much do you want to spend, or how big is your budget on this project? G-Team and EC are both licensed Briggs dealers and can order you a new one, Jacks Small Engines has some pretty decent prices as well, but I assume you'd prefer one a little less pricey.

Well.... actually no, it should look like the one above. Not sure where you're picking your code up in Photobucket Mike.

When you load the images, scroll down a little and check the little box beneath each picture you want to post. Then scroll to the bottom of the page, and there is a "Generate HTML and Image Code" button, way over on the right. Click that!

Then you want to go down to the box just below where it says... "IMG clickable thumbnails for message boards - recommended" and simply left click in the box to copy. Then come back here and paste it to your post.

In that fashion Photobucket generates the thumbnailed image to play here, allowing for much smaller file size, and thus easier page loads for those on dial-up. And, once you click on it, the image plays in full resolution, whatever size that may be.

See the thread on thumbnailing your images Mike... makes life simpler for those on dial-up. Getting it to Photobucket is the hard part, you simply grabbed the wrong code there. Last two three sections of the Tutorial will show you what to do there.

Since Briggs has hidden, or at minimum moved this information on their site, and we're eternally seeking it and can't find it there any longer. And, since we don't have control of any other sites out there containing this info, I thought we should have a copy of our very own here for reference!

And, to try and make it accessible to as many souls as possible, I converted it to pdf format.
Also in Word 2003 Document...
