Kohler Engines / Kohler 25hp hard starting and back firing
« on: September 22, 2022, 09:13:52 am »
Hello all,
I have been having issues with my command 25hp starting. The first start is always the worst, it will crank and crank and crank, all the while backfiring in the intake with flame coming out the carb.

I am running a nikki black tube carb which was cleaned thoroughly
valve lash is .004 on the intake and .006 on the exhaust
fresh spark plugs
stock internals (aftermarket rods and pistons)
stock timing (per ARC flywheel) ---could the timing be off?

I was able to run a buddies "stock" BP and it would just fire right up and purr. I'd like to get mine to start as reliably.

UPDATE!

When the oil pan I was using had the centering hollow pin missing at the oil passage up to the block. The motor did not have one originally, or it must have fallen out, before I put the engine back together. Either way, I looked at my "old" kohler engine and saw the was infact supposed to be a centering pin in. So I put the pin into my current motor and shes been great.

Side Thought: When did Kohler change/update the design of their oil pans? My first engine, which I believe is younger than my current engine, has an additional groove cut in the gasket surface opposite the oil filter and the centering pin has an additional counter bore for the oring that come with the oil pan gasket. The current motor I am running did not have either of there features. I have since put the younger oil pan on to fix my leaking oil problem.

Hello all!

Had a race this past Friday night and, for the second time, the oil pan gasket blew out right behind the oil filter. This happened the first time a week earlier. Found out the bolts close to the oil filter were loose so I replaced the gasket, added some RTV and made sure to properly torque all the pan bolts. However the gasket blew out again.

Has anyone else had this problem?

The engine crank case is still vented and not clogged. The oil pressure, based on my gauge, is about 35-40 psi at WOT.

planning on taking the pan and block down to nothing and having them resurfaced flat so they mate together well. However if there is a simpler solution, I'm all ears!

Driveline / Peerless 700 with 4 Key Output Shaft?
« on: August 14, 2017, 02:14:05 pm »
I am wondering if there is a Peerless 700 transmission with a 4 keyed output shaft?

I have seen one before but not sure if they came with 4 keys or if the shaft was from another transmission and put in the 700 case.

Thanks

Kohler Engines / Kohler CV491s cutting out issue
« on: July 17, 2017, 12:06:42 pm »
Hello everybody,

I have recently gotten to the point with my stock kohler CV491s and chassis where I could take the mower for a buzz around my track. The track has some bumps on a straight-away just before a turn and I found that as I crossed the bumps and entered the turn the engine would cutout or hesitate. A second or 2 later then engine would come back to life as if nothing was wrong. So I am confident this is a fueling issue. Could the pump be bad? That would mean the gravity feed wasn't fast enough to compensate for the bumps? The carb is brand new so I can't imagine that is the issue however I'm open to all suggestions.

Thanks

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / To anyone running Nikki black tube 2 barrel carb
« on: August 05, 2015, 09:29:58 am »
I put a Nikki black tube on my kohler twin and she just doesn't like to start. She will crank and crank and then finally spudder and fart a bit before she catches and runs. If i choke her she'll fire right up. Once the motor is running its strong and the carb seems to be working just but if i shut her down and try to start it again the issue somes back.

Have any of you out there running a nikki black tube come across this issue?

Ive toyed with the idea of finding where the low side fuel inlet is and opening it hoping it will start easier. Then someone mentioned the carb may be designed to be choked before each start up. Not sure what to do and hoping for a bit of guidance/information.

Thanks

Kohler Engines / CV command valve guide replacements?
« on: May 19, 2015, 08:33:38 am »
Good morning all,

Took some time last night to wear-in my recently rebuilt cv23 command on a friends engine stand and found that one of my exhaust valve guides is leaking. Are these replaceable parts? I cannot seem to find anything online parts wise. Has anyone else had a leaking exhaust valve guide?

Thanks

Post your Pics! / My first build (BP)
« on: March 02, 2015, 08:24:55 pm »
Hello Everybody,

Its hard to believe that warm weather is just around the corner here in CT with about 2+ feet of snow on the ground but race season is quickly approaching. This season will be my first season racing my own build. Last season a very generous fellow racer offered his BP to me for the season. Needless to say I was hooked after the first race. So starting last October I began my build and I figured I'd post some pictures and see what you guys think.

My next step is pulley and clutch setup.

(hope the pictures work....)

Driveline / peerless 700 bolt spacing
« on: December 06, 2014, 03:18:44 pm »
Hello everyone new guy here building a BP from a John Deere L130. Today I got the rear axle mounted up completing my rolling chassis. Now I'm planning to mount the transmission but I'm not positive on how to get the bolt spacing pattern to match the plate I want the Peerless 700 to bolt to. Does anyone have a drawing of the Peerless 700 bolt pattern?

Thanks everyone pictures soon to come.
