That just boggles me how it can be that worn out and not smoke!!!!  I guess a leakdown test is next!

This is not unusual. Could be worn compression rings but the oil control ring is still doing it's job.... for now. Could be a bad valve or seat combined with worn guides. Could be a head gasket, warped head, warped deck etc..... Basicly anything that lets combustion gasses into the crankcase but isn't drawing oil.

A proper leakdown test and knowing how to interperet the results is the best and easiest way to pinpoint the area of the problem.

Thanks George, always a wealth of good info from you.

Speaking from my experience.... you might break even if aluminum prices stay up!

  I know what you are saying Mowdak1, this ain't my first rodeo. There's always risk in a business venture, I've owned a body shop, a welding shop, 4 semi trucks and various other entrepreneurial enterprises, some do well, some break even, some go bust but I never quit trying... Best part is, even my worst adventures did net me some wealth over the last 25 - 30 years..... mostly in tools and equipment that I still have.... I have enough toys in the shop now to make Tim the toolman jealous :D

Prices on used mower & auto parts in general on ebay have dropped a lot this last year or so. I used to be able to make a nice profit parting out just about anything but quite frankly it has gotten hard to break even much less make a profit, it's to the point I don't even want to go into the shop to turn a wrench parting a mower anymore. In fact I'm stopping for now, gonna keep the engines and a couple mowers I have stashed here for myself to play with.

I'm going back on the road trucking as an owner operator, I have 8 years over the road experience and have owned 4 semi trucks so it's not a new thing to me, just been away from it for almost 8 years.

This time I'm putting the '06 F-350 dually to work late January and leasing on to Horizon Transport to pull travel trailers, boats and horse trailers. They are one of the largest RV hauling companies and I like what they have to offer, especially being able to dispatch yourself over the internet and only have to work as much as you want to. Gonna put the 5th wheel, gooseneck, new toolchest, mudflaps and Extang R/T roll up tonneau on the truck this week while the weather holds in the 70's.

Squid, do you mean "Solid breaking system" or a "Solid braking system"?  Because we all know that a brake that breaks is a bad thing!  LOL

Melco's customer service is lacking to say the least.

I purchased and paid for a pallet of the 44 cube V-twins on Nov 15th with PayPal (instant payment, not an echeck).

I heard nothing from them and they didn't answer emails so I pulled on the purse strings last Friday night and filed a dispute to freeze the funds. Dayum they responded quickly then

I finally get a call from the trucking company, they arrived today December 3rd..... Unfortunatly the didn't listen to my request for a local terminal in Fayetteville which is close to me and instead delivered them to Raleigh which is 75 miles each way  Looking at the freight bill, they were not even shipped until the 28th which was 13 days from when I paid. Thats pretty sad for a simple shrink wrapped pallet of 8 engines.

However, the order did come in from Sears correctly and they are all 44 cube intek and ELS vertical shaft engines so I closed the PayPal dispute. I ordered the 44 series because I did not want a surprise mix of V-twin and Oppose flatheads which could be in the 40 series batches.

Out of curiosity I randomly snatched one out of the box and put it on the test stand and note that the service tag on this engine says "Not Repairable".

I Grab the crank and it turns over free, has a little end play but not too bad, yank the plugs and do a quick compression test..... 90 psi on each cylinder..... Throw the Briggs spark tester on each plug wire and it has good spark... Decided to do a quick run test on it so I put the fouled plugs back in it, take off the cover over the air filter and drop a thimble full of gas down the intake and it fired right up.

Tomorrow I'll throw an oil pressure gauge on it, run a leakdown test and finish hooking it up on my test stand correctly and let it run for a bit. Be interesting to see what I come up with out of 8 engines.

I'll post more as I know more.

Note I am taking a $700 gamble with these engines and don't recommend anybody do this unless they can stomach a loss, I do this with my play money to hopefully make a profit, worst case I hope to just break even just selling the parts but you never know what is gonna happen.

Complete MCP brake setup and more front and rear. Rear is for 1-1/4" axle, has front spindles both masters and brake bias adjuster too. Seller has a very good rating too.

It ain't a problem with your puter. The photobucket album those pics were in simply doesn't exist anymore. They have either been deleted or moved

« on: November 22, 2007, 07:59:49 pm »
do they make oversize ones? I think the block bore will be bigger diameter than stock because the guide is loose in it.

Yes. Take it to a good machine shop. Valve guides are not DIY parts unless you have the tooling.

Unless you have a fuel pump on the engine the carbs get the fuel by gravity feed which isn't going to happen with the tank under the seat.

You can leave the tank there and just put a briggs fuel pump on it if it doesn't have one.

Sure it can be welded and machined. The block will have to be cleaned and then baked to burn off contaminates that are absorbed into the cast aluminum before it can be welded, prefferably with a TIG welder.

But at $50-$100 hr at a good machine shop, it is cost prohibitive when you can get complete used engines and mowers that run for under $100.
