The way I look at it, I would think that the rule possibly came into play to keep a stock appearance. I could be wrong, but that's how I see it. In the A/P class where the mid-mount engines are seen the most, the tendency would be to want to move the engine forward to get the weight on the front end. I could see where that would take away from the stock appearance. So keeping them going through the hole in the plate would make sense (i guess). But when we are putting axles on top of frames, lowering front ends, changing the "orientation" of the front ends (camber, caster), lowering the seats, modifying these things to no end...why is lowering the engine plate such a big deal?? I am not mad in any way, I am just voicing my opinion.
