Post Your Video / Youtube Playlist "Dump Post"
« on: March 15, 2020, 09:02:23 pm »
I know activity on here isn't as much as it was a few years ago, but I'm sure there are a few here that don't partake in "the facebooks" and "the twitters". As I am on here infrequently myself, I will be dumping several links in this post to playlists of Youtube videos I have uploaded. I had pretty much forgotten about a couple years, and a friend noticed I was missing them, so I got them uploaded this weekend. So without further ado, here they are by year:

2015 Summer Shootout Carlisle Iowa:
First US Sanctioned Race I ever attended. Shared before, but with a new post, figured worth sharing again.

I only recorded the Feature Races for this event.

2018 Summer Shootout Carlisle Iowa:
Anyone noticing a trend here?

2020 Outlaw Syrup Races Sioux Falls:

This was a first time event. I was told that part of the promotion staff had attended the Battle at the Barn in Des Moines, and a couple people I know had been in talks with the promoters about adding mowers to their lineup. We had two classes, governed and ungoverned. I ran my GP in the Governed Class and place Third. The response of the mowers was pretty good, so they are looking to run them again in the future, and it sounds like they will plan to use the US rulebook and do some tech'ing too.

Driveline / Re: Peerless 700 Gear Ratios?
« on: November 21, 2019, 09:28:02 pm »
I think there seems to be some misinterpretation here.
When the previous posters were talking about 1:1 ratio, they are referring to one specific pair of gears in their trans, one each on the mainshaft and countershaft.
One will have the shift keys and the other will have the gears splined to be stationary on the shaft.

I did a parts lookup on your model transaxle you specified, and going with the same numbers as others running 700's, 4th gear in yours would be the 1:1 ratio. Your model then has a 3:1 reduction with the input. Then 16.5(total ratio of your 4th gear) divided by 3(input ratio) gives you a rear end ratio of 5.5 to 1.
The reason you didn't reach a 1:1 with any gear is that you calculated your total ratios from the input to the axleshaft, which includes the reduction of the input/bevel pair, and the extra reduction from the countershaft to the differential.
Take all the extra reductions out and we can figure the ratios of the 5 gears/reverse themselves.

1st- 3.03:1
2nd-2:1
3rd-1.21:1
4th- 1:1
5th-0.72:1
reverse-2.42:1

Now, there isn't anything wrong with having figured out the overall ratio here. If you are running a transaxle, which I take it you are, you can use the numbers you have to adjust your pulleys to fine tune your gearing based on track size.

Racing Mower Builds / Re: Local mod class racer

I'm going to have to pick up a piece of 1" round for my rear axle, and somehow adapt my wheels to fit it. The wheels I have are for a 3/4" axle with a square key. I may just turn down the ends of the 1" to 3/4", that would probably be the simplest solution. I should be able to make them nice and tight too.

I have reservations about this. From personal experience, on an old racer I built, I had a jackshaft that was 3/4" and had the ends turned down to 5/8". The one end that gave me problems a couple of tiies was the end that had my drive sprocket on it, as the chain was spring tensioned. It broke right at where i had turned it down. I went to straight 3/4" and never had any problems afterwards. The axle diameter your using is a larger, but I'm worried that the shoulder where you stop your cut will become a stress point.

I know some will say use the search function, which is good as well, but here's a good thread, some others might say THE thread to check out.  If I assume the Weed Eater Chassis is like the old Craftsman box frame chassis, then the whole process will pretty much be the same as the thread I linked, outside of the front axle mounting.

Kohler Engines / Re: Command twin crank size

I can say they came with both. I have three command 20's. one has the 1.125" dia. crank, and the other two are the 1".

Post Your Video / Carlisle Summer Shootout Videos
« on: December 02, 2016, 11:56:10 pm »
So, after MUCH procrastination, I finally have playlists up of the Labor Day races at River Bottom Raceway in Carlisle. I have Saturday night from 2015 and Saturday and Sunday from 2016.
I'm sure my (video recording) skills can use some improvement.

2015

and 2016
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRghZVAUwqWdO-WYyUV6tzKsUiJxurS9_

I was a little disappointed in the lower turnout for this year, but I won't hold it against anyone. Sounded like there were other things scheduled for the same weekend, so I guess some people had to decide one over the other. Fellow member boxcar went with me and he had a good time!
Definitely planning for next year again!

Newcomers / Re: Newbie seeking mower selection advice

I would say the simplest thing would be to get a quad too. It doesn't have to be new. Used ones can be for less than what was quoted earlier, and finding a 2wd should bring the price down further.
In order to be somewhat helpful, if you are dead set on the mower route, what I can tell you, the place to look would be the All Terrain Lawn Tractor Forum.

I don't know if it is an error or something, but when I had tried the link for 2009, I got the 2010 yearbook. The links for all the rest were good.

I'm gonna say that transaxle more than likely won't be of much use. What you got there looks and sounds alot like it's for a variable belt setup.
There's a thread at the top of the forum page for ID'ing transmissions and transaxles.
As for the aftermarket gears, it's primarily changing out the pieces made from powdered metal with factory replacement steel equivalents.
the kit you are referring to for the 820 is the 017 kit, which from what I had heard and read on here was it was discontinued and hard to find.

First off, what Ed said. Zach, good luck. Get me drunk and I might give some internal engine dope. Or I may just gladly drink your beer and tell you nothing.

I'm thinking I might have to stock up!

Just wanted to say I had a good time, even though I was just watching. It was great getting to meet some of you guys who I see a lot on here, and I learned some valuable information to take back home. Will definitely be making plans to come back again at least once, and hopefully with my own machine, and with more people than just me, myself and I.

I'm making plans to attend at least one of these races, and hopefully bring a couple of friends of mine that are interested as well.

Driveline / Re: Speed calculator for peerless 400
« on: May 11, 2015, 03:01:03 am »
I ran the numbers through and here's what I get.

I got 0.625:1 pulley ratio.
input shaft to bevel gear is 2.538:1
1.692:1 output to axle ratio.

Total reduction ratio not including the shifted gears is 2.683935:1

1st gear is 2.4375:1
2nd gear is 1.619:1
3rd gear is 1.2:1

Total drive ratios in each gear will be:
1st is 6.542:1
2nd is 4.345:1
3rd is 3.221:1

The ratios sound right. But plugging them in to get MPH using what stvn_VA posted, I still get some seemingly odd/large numbers.
41.544mph 1st gear.
62.55mph 2nd gear.
84.378mph 3rd gear.

As a machinist and CNC Programmer, I have brainwashed myself into enjoying doing math stuff like this. Probably because of what it's getting used for....  :)
