Drill and tap peerless 700?
« on: December 31, 2008, 01:37:06 pm »
I was just looking at my peerless 700 and it has a 5/8-9 spline but no snap ring groove to hold on the sprocket like on the 31 spline,I am going to make an adapter to hold the sprocket but im wondering how to hold the adapter on the spline, tap a hole in the end of the shaft maybe,or does anyone know of a different way

Thanks Mike

That shaft is case hardened and you may not beable to drill it. George is right EC has hub for there sprockets that will fit a 9 splin. The problum with that hub, is that the set screw wont lock on to the shaft very tight and hold the hub in place. So for about $80 just replace the entire shaft with a fine splin. Or find a old 700 that is broken and take the shaft out of it.

Mike...you are correct...that shaft is case hardened......don't think you will be drilling into it very easily.
.....I did see a guy who carefully, butt-welded a small threaded stud on the end of the shaft and used
a washer and bolt to hold the counter sprocket on.  I thought that was rather neat. Doesn’t need a lot of pressure, ..no more that what a snap ring can take.

I'm with you Mike, just replace the shaft, I think George can get them.

Happy Holidays

I think you are going to find that it might create more trouble than what it's worth. I would recommend changing the shaft as mentioned above.

if tension is correct and alignment is correct they will run with NO retention. I know because I had no time to replace a snap ring that I found missing. No Idea how long it was missing but I ran 2 more races before getting a snap ring on it. SO it should not require much retension. I have one now and the set screw  has been sufficient. I ave also done like I do my master links I put some silicone on the end of it and let cure.
Thats using red lock tight on the set screw. But if you do apply heat before removeing the set screw.
