Peerless 820 Gear Delete
« on: June 14, 2023, 02:56:00 pm »
I am a new member to the forum, this is my first post, so if I am doing anything incorrectly procedure-wise, please feel free to correct me. I tried finding answers to my question first, maybe i did not look well enough. But I am in possession of a Peerless 820, and plan to run it flipped. I will be removing the spider gears and installing the locking ones from Rom's, along with buying the gear-set upgrade, probably #2. Getting to the point, I think i would like to make the transmission a 3-speed. I have heard that Peerless even made some factory 3-speeds. Mine is currently a 5-speed. How do I do this without having "Dead Gears?" Ie. i don't want to attempt to shift into 3rd and end up at a non-existent 4th. I know i can do it externally, like putting a stop on my lever or somewhere on the linkage, but I am curious if there is an internal solution. Something closer to a factory solution.

You don't shift during the race, so just use a lockout for high gear.

Yea, i knew i would only be using my 1:1 gear set in the 820 for racing. So by lockout, do you just mean something to keep me from accidentally shifting during a race if i were to bump my shift lever?

I thought there was a spacer that existed for the 700 transmissions that had keys that sat in the counter shaft keyways that would not allow the shift keys to travel further. That?s how some peerless 700s were a factory 3 or 4 speed even though the cases and countershafts accommodate 5 gears. Would be straightforward to build your own with a piece of tube cut to length of the same thickness of the gears you?re removing then weld in keys to ride in the counter shaft keyways to stop the shift keys from being able to travel further.

Dalton,

Peerless does make spacers to take the place of gears, and they fit all Peerless transaxles and transmissions.  P/N 786071 is the smooth-bore spacer for the splined bevel-gear countershaft, and P/N 786072 is the spacer for the shifter-brake shaft.  The 786072 spacer has the internal tabs that fit into the shift-key slots so when you reach the last gear in your cluster, the keys won't go any farther -- "locked out".
I keep these spacers in stock, if you need them.  They're currently $3.00 each plus shipping.

The man, the myth, the legend. I was hoping you would reply. And that sounds perfect. I will be placing an order for a gearset upgrade soon so I will order some spacers as well. I'm just across the state from you over here in Farmington area; if you have a brick and mortar location I would love to make a road trip sometime.

Hi Dalton,

Sorry for not Replying sooner.  "The man, the myth, the legend"?  Thank you for the compliment!

Farmington as in Illinois, Kansas or Missouri?  I'm in MO, on the north side of H Highway, just four miles east of Business Loop 49 in Butler, MO; 3rd driveway east of the UU Junction.  Just over an hour south of Kansas City.  My "brick and mortar" is steel truss, but you're welcome to stop by.  Contact me first to make sure I'll be here when you want to arrive.
