700 3 speed
« on: August 23, 2008, 05:47:07 am »
My friend is picking up a old lwm with what he thinks to be a peerless 700 3 speed. Are the three speed 700's good for racing? Me and him plan on taking all the grease out of it, cleaning it up, repace seals and add oil to it. Will it stand up?

Many folks only run 3 speeds in them, using spacers to block the two gears removed out. Reduces rolling mass.

If it is a 700 - 3 speed, it'll work fine for you.

Most find however that what they found thinking it was a 700 3 speed, is in fact a Foote tranny. See the Transmission Identification thread case is shaped like a 700, but they are much lighter internally. Dependent upon application, that one will work in some cases, as long as you aren't putting a lot of torque to it.

I've had a few before, never for racing though. If I can remember correctly, it's a 500 series.

Well he told me it was a 700 but it is a foote. Not will it hold up in the sportsman class with a mostly stock motor?

well, If your going to run a stock 28ci flat head in the s/p class, you mine as well just govern it at exactly 3650 rpm and make the gear ratio 8:1 and run it in imow. Wont be much stress on that tranny either, I think with it race prepped it might make it threw imow or super stock. Squidd runs a 3 speed foote with no problems in imow.

i know that it is a foote.. but i thought id chime in about the 700 3 speeds..

i boughtr one.. brand new..

the ratioeres werre
7:1 -1st
4:1 -2nd
2;1-3rd

and i also noticed.. that the big gear on 3rd was drilled to be less weight.. i still have the gears around some where.. i just never used that tranny becasie of the big jump between gears
