Engine Wiring/Chassis Wiring Diagram
« on: May 10, 2006, 04:32:11 pm »
I have a question concerning the engine wiring.  I have an older Montgomery Ward 3 speed rider with a 10 hp engine.  I did a search and found the post with the B & S alternator diagrams and it helped a bit, but I need clarification.  I have stripped my mower of all the mowing parts, headlights and all the related switches, etc.  Now I would like some Dummy proof help to tie all of the components together to complete the electrical system.  Could someone walk me through this or provide a link to a diagram?  I basically need to know how to hook the battery to the motor and all in between.  Thanks a bunch.

For your basic "racing" mowchine...(no lights, no charging, Kill switch and push button starter) this is all you need...

Okay then.  First the charging.  Why or why would I not want to have the alternator connected?  Oh and call me an idiot, but I have no idea what most of the drawings you sent are.  Yes my village misses me.  What can I use for a kill switch?  I'd appreciate an IM if anyone can help me.  my screen name is Signal50.  Thanks.

Most guys remove or at least disconnect the charging system, often running a lightened flywheel with no magnets (quicker) and then just trickel charge the batery between races...Alternators do produce "a little" drag on engine and are not needed...

Dang...I didn't think I drew THAT bad...

Best is a "pull off" type teatherd kill switch so if/when you fall off, the motor dies and does not run off wild...Look on ATVs, Snowmobiles and Jet skis...

Okay.  First, what are the green, blue and red wires hooked to.  If I did want to hook up the alt, where do I attach is?  Can you label your drawing?

Do you recognize the "battery"...? (+ and -) ???

Heavy (red) wire from battery+ goes to Solinoid (large terminal)

Then from other large terminal on Solinoid Heavy (red) wire to starter...

Smaller (blue) wire goes to "push button" starter switch and then to smaller terminal on Solinoid...

"Kill Swtich" runs from terminal on coil, to switch and then ground...(green)

Coil runs to Plug...(black)

This is coming along great.  This forum needs a strictly tech how-to section.  As for the charging wire, do I run it back directly to the positive terminal on the battery?  Can I ground the motor in addition to grounding the battery to the frame?

Yes and yes...

Although it wouldn't hurt to put a "on/off" switch on alternator wire to be able to shut it down or disconnect when not running...

Hey this is great.  I'm real glad you took the time to help out.  I'd like to volunteer my time and services to help the forums along.  I'm unemployed for the time being (thanks Fort Drum) so I have a lot of free time.  Im co-located in Redwood, NY (most of the time) but I am in DeRuyter, NY quite often.  I am currently weeding out my father-in-laws workshops and his extreme collection of small engine stuff spread out between 3 sheds and 2 garages.  I would officially like to recommend a strong tech section for newcomers like myself.  There is a lot of information out there that needs to be captured and put on display.  This thread is a perfect example.  If there is anything that I can help with, feel free to ask.  Thanks again.

Welcome to the MowBetter board Upgrade302...

Hang around...check out some of the other threads and forums...(sometimes we actually do put out some "useful" information... )

Try the "Search" feature (button in header line) type in a particular issue, and you may find what you need...

If not Post a "specific" question and several of our knowledgeable members may be able to help...

Well I have the whole search thing down pretty good.  I belong to a handful of forums like this one.  One thing that I have noticed in all of them is the repetitive questions posed by new members.  They are usually the basic "how can I go faster, cheaper".  Understandably most people don't use the search option, but if you isolate and manage that basic info and make it reasonably obvious it cuts down on those questions and helps to spread knowledge.  Visiting a library to do research involves a lot of searching but even they break it down by catagory.  Thanks again guys.   Maybe with Squids knowledge I will be able to get my mower to fire in the morning.
