montgomery ward 12hp b&s engine what tranny?
« on: October 07, 2007, 03:07:48 pm »
its an old montgomery ward mower it has a 12 hp flat head that says ie or something and the engine runs good but when i but it into gear the tires just barely spin a little bit. im wondering if this would have to do with the tranny or the belts? it has bin sitting out side for a long time i just began tearing it down yesterday.

any one know of any places to buy 20x8 tires for cheap. cuz im only 15 and dont have 100 bucks to blow on tires.

also this is my first post so if i did somthing wrong sorry

Not to snuff out the fire.....But what are your intentions to do with this mower??? Race, Just modify for some neighboorhood fun, Use it out on some trails in the woods???? Reason I ask is that this is a racing forum but we can at least direct you in the proper direction if your not going to to race with an organized group. Thanks!

Right there is the ideal frame (MTD) and the ideal single cyl. flathead engine (28CID) for racing, The tranny on that is a vari-drive and first thing you should do is take the vari-drive parts out and sell them, because they are useless for racing.
Gotta love a good 'ol Briggs Flathead!

first off you need to get a tethered kill switch, get your steering as tight and strong as possible, get either a tranny and live axle set up, or a shiftable transaxle, and GOOD brakes.

Glad to here you wish to turn this into a racer!!! First things first....I know your all excited about building this into a great racer, but.........you need to find where you will run it and get a hold of that organizations rules.

Sometimes the pure enjoyment and excitement of building a racer makes us look past the rules and build guidelines...but unless they are in hand...you really can't move to much forward on a racing mower build.

Money is very much a decision making factor on building a mower for racing for a lot of people (young and old alike), so spending money on a item that is not allowed in an organizations rules..was well...a waste of money!! So do some homework and locate a group near you so you can build to race! Good Luck.
