Tranny Questions
« on: May 19, 2007, 02:32:49 pm »
As you guys all know hydrostatics pretty much all suck and my crapsman
has a hydrostatic, before i pull it off to clean and sell it, will a transaxle
bolt up to the hydro bolt pattern? also, is the tranny input shaft the same height
or will i have to make this pretty custom, the tranny i have in mind is a peerless
3spd. Thanks for any suggestions. The front steering is on its way, and the rear axle cant go in untill i get the tranny.

So are you planning a tranny/live axle... or a transaxle setup...?

You mention both in your post above.....

i think hes going with a transaxle by the way he mentioned the holes lining up
and if he is...
your gonna have to make it custom, because the "stock" mounting holes will give you a "stock" height.
you have to lower the machine, so you'll be doing a little bit of sawzall'in, grinding, welding and drilling.
look over jacobs s/s in the build thread to see what im talking about

Well pretty much any transaxle can replace it. Well, every transaxle except a 600. They have a rare round casing and require exhaust clamps to get them mounted. Also, the 600 is offset. This means more work to get it mounted the right way. The 600 is also a 3 speed. So that might be the one you had in mind. They are in fact an extremely durable transmission. They utilize a shift fork which means that they don’t use shift keys. The 600 also is a more direct transaxle. It is pretty much gear to gear. Another plus with a 600 is they don’t have reverse chains, so you won’t have to worry about the chain breaking at high RPM’s and ruining your casing among other parts. There are 2 600 type transaxles. One is the 601 series the other is the 600 series. They are pretty much the same except the 601 is geared lower. I hope this help’s
