I've got an 11hp Briggs (model number not known right now, since the mower is an hour away).

You know how increasing the timing on a car can give you a little extra performance? Well, is it possible and is there any advantage to doing this on a single-cylinder mower engine?

Sorry for the ingorance on my part, but where do you advance it from?
I'm assuming there's markings for the timing light shown on the flywheel... or is it a little more involved that? (I can't remember seeing anything last summer when I had the shroud off).

Also, what kind of advancement do you recommend.... 1... 2 degrees?

nope no marks ain't that easy, you simply order set of off set flyweel keys and play with it till you like the way it runs. I preffered the #4 or #5 on my engine.

Didn't think it was as easy as what I was hoping for. Good to know.

Thanks for the info, it's greatly appreciated. I'll look into those. I'm not sure if  the Briggs Racing shop here in the city has them - if not, I'll bug you about it.

Ok, so I ran down to my usual mower parts shop, which is a Briggs Performance dealer, but the guy says that they don't make keys for the 11hp Briggs.... only up to something like the 8 or 8.5hp models because they're commonly used for Jr. Dragsters and Go-Kart racing (ok, that's understandable I suppose).

He says that from what he's heard, many people in my situation wind up grinding some keystock down to get things where they need it..... which sounds like a royal pain in the butt to me.

Any chance that you've got something for my application kicking around, or know where to get it online? (25 series, 11hp Briggs)

LOL. Usually he's really good about stuff.... he's the only guy I'll deal with over there and can hook me up with anything I'm looking for, but I guess this little factoid slipped past him.

Maybe I should go back and show him up. I always find that kind of stuff entertaining :D

YUP YUP YUP they all use the same key. LOL go get him but be nice since he is the only one you deal with. But yea the offset keys he has for the karting race engines will work very well.
