If your rules allow the use of live axle on a factory equipped mowchine, does that also allow you to modify and use a heavier axle, (i.e. Kart style 1 1/4" Chrome Moly axle)? Or, does the rule state specifically, lawn mower axle.

Yes a live axle can be used BUT only if the original mower came with a live axle.

So if your mowchine came with a transaxle, then your stuck with a transaxle.

You may modify the transaxle or change one out to another transaxle.

The use of a thicker axle is fine for the safety aspect. so a kart axle would work IF you could stick one in a transaxle.

One more thing to add to my axle failure.  I installed a washer between my axle housing and my wheel tube.
I used bolts with a big washer on the outside to secure my wheel onto the shaft. The washer between the wheel and the tranny was to keep the wheel from running on the shaft tube seal.

This washer I have found actually cut into the Chrome Molly.  Just like a tubing cutter!!
Another lesson learned. Hopefully with my Not so Perfect plan someone else here can also learn and not make the same mistake as I have done.

The most important things I have learned about Mowchine's is......   Set up set up set up!
Weight ratios, tire pressures, seat position, braking, Steering and that is just the tip of the iceburg!

Just out of curiosity was the shaft discolored where it broke.

The only color was from the grease. Not from being hot.
A clean rag wiped it to it's original color.

It was a 1 piece solid axle welded in the middle.
I think the washer and the length was my problem.

Thanks Snowman for the question.
