Good engine choice
Post by Squidd on May 14, 2005, 8:48am

What's a good engine choice for the IMOW series, that has build up potential If I move up to SP...??

I've been seeing some NIB 13.5 hp Briggs I/Cs (with starter) for around $400 delivered..

Is that a good choice, or should I look for some special part number 14 or 14.5 type engine...??

Or...Is a 12hp with 11 hp head (or some such combo) a better "build up" block to start with...?

go with the 12.5. Keep in mind that an IMOW engine is bone stock and cannot run an 11hp head on it.

So your saying a 12.5 as opposed to the 13.5 ??

Will run the motor "box stock" this season for IMOW, but want a good base/block to Mod for SP for next year...

(Saw some AP and SP racers today...thought to myself...."I "gotta" get me one of those".. ;D)

But promised myself I'd start in IMOW and start collecting parts for the SP..

Word is a 28RXXX is the block to look for... :-X

I couldn't tell about a 28rXXX being the motor of choice I don't race IMOW. I can tell you the 12, 12.5 and the 13.5 are the same engines.

If the 12, 12.5 and 13.5 are the same motor, what does the factory do to 'em to make the hp different for each?

By putting the governor spring in a different hole...and changing a sticker

most of the time they simply change the sticker.

Was told this about some of Briggs engines, George tell me if its true, While there are some very subtle differences they are exactly the same engine. Why? Was told its because its cheaper tomake and sell a 13.5 as a 12 instaed of making a bunch of 12's and a bunch of 12.5's as well as a bunch of 13's and so on and so forth. Makes some sense.

Oh, and because it isnt legal to sell a 12 as a 13.5 but they can sell a 13.5 as a 12.

you would have to ask briggs there specific reasoning as to why they do the things they do but it is true. The making biggest difference is where they read the hp on the spec sheets. When they quit makeing the flat heads they had such an inventory built up and a demand for other/lessor engines they simpoly relabled some and sold them as such i.e. 10.5, 12, 12.5, 13, 13.5. Keep in mind this was done mostly in the last two years. Easiest way to tell is the model number. if it starts with a 28 then it is a 12hp motor regardless as to what its labeled as.

I was thinking 12.5 and the 13's had a different stroke than the 12 hps.
