Didn't Start?
« on: March 31, 2007, 06:06:42 pm »
I bought a new battrery 2 or so years ago, and never had to charge it and
I use it almost every day, so this morning i went out to tow some more
engines back to my shop, and it wouldnt start  .
The starter would engage but whined when it didnt turn it over, this is a
craftsman command 20, i jumped it and now it runs and starts up fine.
Does anyone know what the problem was, i leave the keys on it, perhaps
i left it in the on position?

Almost sounds like your starter hung up and the Bendix didn't engage with the flywheel and just sat there spinning.

its a good posibility you left the key on. Its also a good possibility someonce might have turned it on...theres a couple people around here that seem to enjoy doing that.

If it's a lawn mower battery, you probably need a new battery. Most are designed for about a two year life span and they typically give up in exactly that fashion. One day they have to be jumped, and they'll run fine once jumped... And, if you charge the battery it'll start right up, for a day or two, but if it sits for a week it's gonna need jumping again.

Jumped the mower off at work for nearly a year, kept the charger on it over the winter months, finally got to the point that if it stalled in the snow bank you had to jump it. Tossed a new battery in the beast and it worked just fine! Not so much as a minute's trouble for about a year and a half, and that machine was being used in a commercial application, mowing 5 sites totalling about 10 acres of grass a week. I'd bet Squidd's next paycheck on it!

Yep batteryes can be a pain.  I work on mowers all the time and have seen some batteryes going on 4 + years but yet I just replaced 1 that was bad after 3 weeks.  But like said above the typical life is 2 years.  And I have seen batteryes do strange things when they go out.
