Mower Building / Setup Help > Other Interesting Builds
Mutant turtle, snapper mudmower.
(1/1)
Timdeere:
Copy pasta from atltf as I have been working on this for a while.
I did leave out some posts on plans and drawings for future plans like the front end and suspension.
So here goes..
already started this a while back but considering I am going to do some upgrades I might as well bundle it up in here.
This is where it started, a customer of ours decided that they didn't want to invest money in to it after having it in storage for 10 years
I asked my boss if I could perhaps take it to fix it back up again and so we got her on the healing bench
Colour really came back to life.. bit it was going to need some polish.
Other than that I got her running just enough to get her home.
Carb was absolutely shot after sitting for all those years.
I got it driving long enough to get it the 5 minutes to my home with a carb that kept flooding and a janky used battery from the scrap pile
After her first clean she looked a whole lot better but o just wanted to see how far I could take it
Polish polish and more polish
Chinesium carb was sort of a bust but a decent parts donor for 13 USD
First time out for a proper test drive
With the engine sorted and not much of a plan I just stuck with atleast fixing the cosmetic issues.
Removed all old stickers and replaced the anti slip tape. I also put it in the centre section as it always kind of bothers me that that gets damaged and I could hide some damage that way as well
Well I know that I will change the transaxle but I'll have some fun in the meantime.
I had ordered a smaller pulley and a belt already and since my belt is 1 stick away from breaking I'll just do it now.
Hydro gear transaxles are actually really adaptable and perhaps even better than most peerless when it comes to parts IF you have experience with them.
Also very helpful company if you are looking for advice or parts.
So this is that access hole I was talking about.
Even with the steering wheel and shaft out you would still need to remove the entire console and pedal assembly to even remove the pan so no thanks
Been a while, finished the gear a while back but really didn't have any time for it so far
Have been working half days because I had too many paid time off so I decided to have a go at it at work.
Main issue I had is that this gear wants to be in reverse but the short chassis didn't allow me to turn it.
I was pondering over welding something up but my lazy :censored: couldn't be bothered.
Co-worker removed a gear from a Deere x350 and.. wait.. hol up..
Stole the subframe from under his nose, drilled some 12mm holes in the snapper and tada.
Needs a little work yet but this should be plenty strong and most of all a good upgrade to the original mounting brackets.
Timdeere:
Brake were frozen up as per usual.
Cooked the whole thing up and dunked it in oil twice and let it marinate for the night .
Pins came out without too much of a fight
After a clean and a quick and dirty coat of paint and some silicone she's free again
Trying the shoes back on..
There's about a half inch to an inch extra clearance allround so I am pleased with that.
Transaxle pulley is on aswell, was a bit of a fight because there wasnt much tolerance built in.
The brake pad on the gear side didn't want to go out yet so I'll try that again when the wheel is off
Other than that I'll probably pick up a belt tomorrow and then I still have to sort out the controls
Poor man's PTO delete, simply smashed the PTO to bits for now but I'll order a bolt and shorten it
With it being a former hydrostatic transmission I did find a really nice spot for a gas cable so that'll go on the shopping list as well
As far as the belt goes I bought a belt which set me back a whopping 100 usd so screw that, I'll order it from Amazon.
The belt didn't fit however but afterwards I wondered if I ever disengaged the clutch.
I just have this picture and have been pondering for an hour now wether I didn't screw up.
I just wanted to order the parts today but I might have to check again tomorrow.
Belt should arrive today.
Meanwhile things moved up the priority list.
I'll be opening the engine today and remove the camshaft and governor.
A customer of ours needs a second hand camshaft and I really want to get rid of the compression release so I call that a win win.
Also I decided to do away with the Walbro and whent for a nibbi that I found for sale on Amazon.
These are really good D slide clones
I only went with a 30mm as there was a special discount on those.
Looking at the Walbro it's 30mm aswell but really necked down at the Venturi so effectively more like 26.
In the end I don't need a huge carb just better throttle response.
Removed the governor and tapped the hole with a 9/16 fine thread.
Put it in with Loctite, rtv and a copper washer so if that'll ever leak I'll be surprised
And while we're at it I pulled the head as well to have it decked
Found a spare metal pushrod in the trash pile
Meanwhile I went looking in our old stock and found a nos water pump manifold for kubota
So I'll cut it off at the red line and use that as an intake manifold together with a 90 degree hose
The holes on the head almost line up perfectly, just need to file it a little
I could also add the pcv hose if I want or block the secondary pipe
Also, starter...
Head came back from the shop, guess I could have gone further but iam happy for now
Quick valve lap
:P
Valves back in, just put it back on the block temporarily so I don't lose things or drop it by accident
Timdeere:
Intake, looking very sharp.
I still have to take some paint off and polish it
Inside diameter is 30mm which lines up perfectly with the head and the carb is also 30mm so that is really nice.
The original manifold had about a 26mm id.
The Bolt holes I filed out and i had just barely had a smidge left but it worked out fine.
Iam also thinking about perhaps scrounging in the scrap pile if I can maybe find some other rockers from a Kawasaki Kohler or Briggs vanguard that I could make work
Looked at it yesterday and decided it was good after a long day of work.
Now iam at work on my off day with too much energy so guess what?
We're port matching.
Custom gasket
Straight shot.
Her majesty back together again
Timdeere:
Ok, first of all r.i.p. mobile users but this is the way it copied and pasted.
Secondly since some posts were posted on different places on atltf and some ramblings were omitted it might not be 100% clear what is happening here.
The plan as it stands now:
I removed the hydrostatic transmission and replaced it with a peerless 915.
It will be an off road machine but mostly hard pack so I did not lock the diff.
Other than that the transmission has been cleaned and rebuilt with bearing on the axles.
Front pulley is 5 inch, rear is 3.75
Front end will be with suspension but iam not yet committing to anything yet until all current modifications are finished.
Engine will be modified to run slightly faster but more importantly more reliable.
I have removed the governor and the compression release.
Also I want to keep a slightly stock look, I actually could have gone for a Briggs vanguard big block that I have but decided against it for that reason.
I might some day change my mind but for now that is what it is
