Where to start?
« on: April 29, 2021, 02:38:04 pm »
Hey, I have been interested in mower racing ever since I was a kid, but never pulled the trigger on an old mower. I finally found a MTD with a 14.5 hp and 42 inch deck (99-2002 if I had to guess. It?s in decent shape. I want to pull the deck off, swap pulleys, and remove the governor, but figured I would try to find some knowledgeable advice before I tear it up. I just want to make a very fast mower that handles like a racing mower. I don?t have a class to follow, I just need extreme speed (for a mower) and safe as possible to ride around the neighborhood. One day I might have time to race, but for now it is just about having fun modding something that?s cheaper than my truck is. I want to make it chain driven, and mod the engine and tranny. Anyone have similar goals that could offer some advice. The engine number is 287707 which is OHV. Where do I start?

Everyone has to start somewhere.   Not trying to discourage you.  Just laying out the ground rules.

All the questions to your answers are in here.  Sit back and do some reading.   You can find the info you need.   In the build section there are many pictures that will help.
