pulley, gear question for new track with new mower
« on: August 13, 2015, 01:58:37 pm »
Currently running 33ci, 16 inch tire in gp class with 700 peerless in 5th gear, question is just bought the mower and current setup is 8-5 pulleys, 16-40 sprockets and running out of gear on the straights, it's a bigger track with wide corners, am I better off bumping up to a 18 trans sprocket or lowering the trans pulley to a 4 or 4.5 to get more top end, thanks

If you change pulleys, chances are you will have to change belts.
If you change sprockets, chances are you may have to change chains.
I would change sprockets and leave the pulleys alone.

A 700 needs to be overdriven to survive.
I would still stick with the 8" engine, 5" trans.
Change the sprockets.
But, thats just me.

Considering you already have a 40 on the rear, it might help you to go to a 4" or 4.5" pulley on the rear.  That way you are still over driving the transmission, and you will have more sprocket options in the future in case you need to go up more on the transmission for an even bigger track.  Its always good to have options and not be maxed out on sprocket sizes when running on your usual "home" track incase you need to adjust for a new track

Have you verified 5th gear ratio in your transmission?

I haven't, pretty new to the sport and just bought first mower with only a couple races done, mainly my question is do you lose more torque makin rear pulley smaller or front sprocket bigger, an18 will give me all I'll meed around my area pretty sure but if I could drop to a 4 inch pulley and be able to run a 14 or 15 tooth front sprocket would that leave me more torque

THAT will depend on your track. Type of soil, banking, tire roll-out, engine performance, chassis setup, PLUS how you drive the mower all add up to how it will perform. If your track is gripping really good and you can apex early, that will allow you more top end speed at the end of the straight. If you have a dry-slick track and tight short turns, you will not be able to reach your target RPM as easily as you'd wish.

What I am trying to say is you are going to have to experiment. There is no do-all, be-all, end-all setup.

To add to Jeff, what works one night might not work the next, it can change dramatically between heat and feature, the finer tuning comes from experience, best find your base line average setup and adjust from there.
