What oil
« on: October 28, 2014, 10:24:12 pm »
I just bought a mower that has a 44 ci intek. It has arc rods, roller rockers etc. Pretty much all the good stuff in her. What kind of oil are you all running in a motor like this?? Also, how much oil do I want to run in it? Or do I just run it at the factory recommend level?? Thanks, boxcar

Brad Penn Grade 1 racing oil in 10w-30 is what i use.  You may not have a failure using other oils, but a high performance motor oil like Brad Penn has anti wear additives and high Zinc (ZDDP) levels and will give added protection to all moving parts, especially the camshaft. I've seen less than .001" wear on the cam lobes after two seasons of racing turning 9,000 rpm+ and high spring pressure levels.  If you can afford a $3000-$5000 racing engine, you should be able to afford a good racing oil.

Brand Penn worked well for me and not as high priced as some of the others like Joe Gibbs, Royal Purlpe and so on.

My primary cam I been running over 6 seasons actually since 2005 and use nothing but Walmart full synthetic. Zero wearthe oil is changed every two races. granted a new motor and break in should have a dinasour oil many say use the zinc additive. But again I break em in on walmart regular oil after the first race I go to the synthetic. Its like anything else though you will get 10'000 different answers to this question. buy what makes you happy and the wallet can afford. the frequency you change it is what makes the real difference

AGREED RUN WHAT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH! REMEMBER WALMART DOES NOT MAKE IT, JUST SELLS IT. IT STILL HAS TO MEET AUTO MAKERS STANDARDS, SO DON'T LET THE NAME ON THE LABEL FOOL YOU.

What did the guy you bought it from run?? Also what is the bearings clearanced for?? There's more to picking oil than colors and brand names. I've always ran Schaeffers oil, 10-30 for a while then my last motor was set up for 15-40

I actully talked to the engine builder tonight and he recommends Valvaline VR1 20-50. Seems a little heavy to me.
