To the peerless 400 lovers out there
« on: August 17, 2014, 12:51:26 pm »
Have any of you lightened the gears inside these things. I run all three of my mowers with these and there awesome . Was thinking of drilling holes to lighten the gears 30% off. Less rotating mass. But was also thinking it might cause drag with the oil hitting and going through the holes in the gear. Anyone tryed this? Thoughts? Thanks

I know there's a bunch of people running these transmissions. Is this too secret or what? Lol . Guess I'll live and learn.

Owen, I say just do it. Most of the guys here are running the 700 peerless, or clone tranny, and have stopped playing with the 350/400 series now. Let us know how it works out.

I never lightened gears in one but never saw a need to. To lighten 30% is a lot. Which means big holes and I would be afraid that would make them weak if your trying to pound them with a good bit of horsepower.

I lighten my home made sprockets a lot on tranny and have had no problems. Going to to try it out. I only have 2nd and 3rd gears in side. I'm usually geared for 2nd but race all different size tracks so sometimes I got to run 3rd. Thanks for your input! :D

If I was going to drill them, I'd chamfer the holes both for oil drag and stress relief.

Love the 400's!
The 350's I always blew them up!

Sounds good rooster. I chamfer my sprockets so I will do the same to the holes I drill in the gears. Will measure out every hole to keep it somewhat balanced the best I can then beat it with 40 hp . Lol

Owen,

How do you plan to "drill" the lightening holes in these gears?  These gears come in two types -- heat-treated steel or powdered metal -- and both types are hard.  Do you have access to special bits that will penetrate these metals, or maybe a laser cutter?  You'll need to be careful not to affect the heat-treating of the gears, especially the teeth and the bores.

Tell ya the truth didn't even think about how hard the gears were . I got a couple dimond drill bits hope they can handle it. If not I got a buddy at a machine shop. When I drill them I'll put up some pictures. Thanks
