Need some help ( advice)
« on: June 21, 2014, 08:24:54 pm »
I've been racing for 4 years now and totally hooked. In for the long haul . Really enjoy Lawnmower racing and don't want to see it fade away around here. I took over our club last year as president of the fvlma. All the old timers are retiring and I'm really having a hard time getting people involved into this sport. I canceled 4 events this year and have 4 still locally . Looking for  ideas to get new people wanting to get into the awesome sport of Lawnmower racing. Thanks

Bring your mowers to local car shows/cruise nights and maybe set up a small table with flyers to hand out (defiantly bring flyers).  I did this at a local tractor cruise in my town and was able to talk to a lot of people because, lets face it, our mowers stand out  .  I had a copy of our schedule and quite a few of the people i talked to showed up to a race or two.  Usually you can find like-minded gear heads at places like that and possibly someone looking for a father/son project.

In the fall go to local high schools and have a show and tell with the shop class. Have them build some mowers.
Also ask the retirees to either donate or sponsor another driver with their mowers.

Thanks Tim and Nick. Car shows sound like a great idea. Next week I have a booth at a out of town fair to help promote the club and hopfully get some interest. We have 3 car shows over the summer so I'll see what's involved to get in one. Our veteran racers had some pretty tired machines and the ones that were nice they want more $ than a new racer wanted to spend. I was thinking of building 3-5 machines , stock class for people that wanted to race but could not build them selfs .at cost of parts. If you've built a club up or saved a club from dieing please tell me how you saved it. I really appreciate your advice. Thanks

See if your local fire company, rescue squad, Rotary, Masonic lodge, school.... has something going on, ask if you can bring a couple mowers and have a demo race.Talk to your local media, get that cute weather gal on a mower. Better yet, get the local media people on some super stocks and have a race. Have your police chief race the fire chief. Some of the silliest ideas have surprising results. Have George in a wet tee shirt contest. Have Rooster drag a boat anchor around.... never mind... He does that already :bash:

Gary Busey and Rick James both used to live in my shop. Redline stole them.

Lol lol lol. Not much of a talker but I'm trying and I'm going to get out there a lot more this year everywhere I can to get some more interest. My wish is to see 50 club members with mowers!! Hopfully in the next year or two it will get there. Thanks

We'd love 50 at Kansas too!

But like everyone is suggesting, stick your neck out there a bit. It's hard getting out of the shell at first, especially we non-talkers.  But in time you'll find it easier.
