engine trouble
« on: February 07, 2007, 09:38:09 pm »
my murray has a twin i/c engine 17.5 hp, but right now, i have a big problem. it can barely stay running at an idle, and when i rev it up, it sputters and backfires ALL THE TIME!!! can you help me figure out what is wrong and tell me how to fix it... i mean, the thing scared the crap out of me when it backfired when i shut it down. i saw flame come out of the exaust in plain daylight... when it discharged its backfire, i saw the entire thing shudder, and what made that even worse, my leg was right by it... i almost got cooked by a freakin lawnmower, so i really need to fix this...  :dunno:

also, you might want to check the flywheel key. it may be sheered off.

take advantage. Then I would finish 7th instead of 10th." - Dubba G

well, i know my choke is fine, but my air filter may need a little work, because it is slightly singed somehow... i think that it might have backfired through the carbeurator... i think that it might be overfueling, because when i took off the airfilter, it did blow out ALOT of white smoke... after that i tryed using some carbeurator cleaner, but it had no effect.
i do beleive that it is... sorry.

K well all of you guys underestimated some thing. One thing the coils on those motors have a tentency to go bad or miss fire when they get hot. That or his plugs are no more good. I just had this problem and plugs fixed it. The backfiring is merely the gas from one cylinder igniting in the exhaust.

the only reason my opposed backfired was cause of holes in exaust. my 1st exaust was the worst. just touch the gas and BANGG.   i saw a cop once and i was just sitting there letting it idle and reved it up a lil to see what he would do and then all of a suddend wheni least expected it KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.  result of all the backfiering was a hair line crack  in the 90 the screwed into the head.  you will beable to see any leaks in you exaust cause thre will be like a black spot were a hole is
