820 Transaxle
« on: October 24, 2013, 10:56:07 am »
If you replace the grease in a 820 transaxle with oil, do you have to add any seals?
I have heard racers say they mix oil and grease together. Does this work ok?
When you weld the spider gears to their shaft, do you also need to weld the gears on the axle or will the splines hold up without welding?
Thanks

I've never added extra seals but mine do seep a little but not enough to bother. As for making it a live axle I've done it two ways: One I welded the side gears to the carrier and turned it into a spool. I tossed the spider gears but keep the center pin. The second way was to bore the carrier halves to 1" and broached a 1/4" keyway into them and used a 1" cart axle.

I cannot comment on the welding as I run the 017 kit only, but the factory amount of bentonite with half a bottle of STP is all we run in ours.

If you are flipping the transaxle, try to add an o ring to the selector shaft on the inside of the case, where the selector shaft passes through the case.  Maybe use a long light spring and a washer to keep adequate constant tension on the oring?  I forgot what the selector shaft looks like on the 820. Also the selector shaft seals out of a 4t65e trans (GM) or 4L60e have very similar diameter shafts.  They are like cone shaped deals that would work well with a spring and washer set up.  If you want any, we rarely use them and I have a bunch I could send you or who ever is interested.
