Ok 31 briggs ran good yesterday started today ran fine then started later that day it would not start i pulled the fflywheel nut off and looked at the key from the top it looks fine but is it possible that i can still be sheared because its back fireing through the carburator. it has fuel and spark.

Did you actually remove the flywheel to inspect the key, or just the nut/bolt?

Avs engine the dipstick tube goes into the block. The older non avs engine the dipstick tube goes into the crankcase cover. Most avs engines also have a plastic engine shroud.

the shroud has been changed due to a flip over and the dip stick goes down into the oilpan block.

You have one of the older non avs engines then. Had it been an avs engine, I was gonna say one of the press on cam lobes could have came loose but all the non avs engines had a cast cam.

Man get you a set of feeler gauges or at least borrow some. Check lash. Here are the specs:

Intake: .003-.005

Exhaust: .005-.007
