imow 8 to 1 ratio not working
« on: May 30, 2013, 01:21:32 am »
ive got a problem i spent all day adjusting my adjustable pulley to try to get 8:1 i got a 6" up front and a 4 1/2" adjustable in the back. No matter how small i make it its a half turn away from 8:1 and any smaller the belt locks up in the pulley. i have a 5 speed spicer transaxle w/16" rear tires ive made 2 other imows before but ive never ran into this problem. Is it a gearing issue in the transaxle or its somthing else?

need help bought to tear hair out.

I always ran ran a 4" adjustable pulley and never had a problem getting the ratio right. With the 4" I was always dead on 8 to 1.

Have you locked the Diff.. My experience with Foot/Spicer are unreliable. And any pulley under 4.5" deals with major slippage.

6" to 4". With a well built clutch system there shouldn't be slippage. We run our Modified twins with an 8 to 4 through a 700 with 18x9.50-8 rears ahd don't have slippage.

What do you mean when you say the belt locks up in the pulley

i try to make the rear pulley so small to get that little bit extra to get 8:1 that theres no grove in the pulley left its to big so theres no grove.

Are you running a true a series pulley? If not, you don't truly have a 6" motor pulley. Easiest bet to make it work, go up on engine pulley.

6" to 4.5 usually will give 9 to 1. 6" to 4" will be closer to the 8 to 1. You are trying to turn a 4.5" into a 4". Start with a 4".

 if you backed out 1 round or a half round from where you're at now would you be over or under  8 to 1. Also is this in the highest gear?

Using the numbers you gave;

6 motor, 4.5 trans, 13:1 final drive

4.5/6*13=9.75:1.

Assuming you can dial the adjustable pulley a full inch up or down you should have room to get 8:1;

3.5/6*13=7.58:1

But if you can only adjust the pulley 1/2 an inch you won't make 8:1;

4/6*13=8.66:1

So let's plug in the value for a 7 inch drive pulley;

4.5/7*13=8.35:1

A little adjustment on the driven pulley

4.35/7*13=8.07:1

Get yourself a 7 inch drive pulley.
