10hp carb question
« on: January 13, 2007, 11:16:59 pm »
I have a B&S 10hp engine and it didn't have a carb when I got it. I found a carb for it but I am not sure where to hook the throttle and choke wires/rods too. I assume the throttle goes to the Governor arm?

If any one has any photos or diagrams that would be VERY help full!

Thanks

John

well, you could just remove the govoner inside the motor and hook the throttle directly to the carb.

The class I am going to be running I have to be governed so that isn't an option.

I kind of have an idea where things go but not 100% sure. Also where the little springs that are on the linkages go.

Is this an older or newer governor set up...?

Is the governor plate vertical or horizontal...?

You got a new style carb and an old style govener...

Do you have all the linkage pieces from both set ups..?? cause your gonna have a little modifiying going on...

Newer govener is pull type and older ones were push type (push/pull on carb/throttle plate)...

Yes I have both sets. I also have an older style carb from an 8HP made about the same time as my 10HP. I would prefer to use the new carb since I can put an K&N filter on it.

Oh yeah..you definetly want the newer two piece carb...
Can you see the difference on the throttle plate linkage from old to new carb...??

That should be the only difficulty you have in the switch..

I will have to go out an look at them (right now it like 3* out and no heat in garage)

Does any one have a photo of how and where the linkage should go I know mine will have to be custom made but it should give me an idea where to start. Like I said the mower I am build was missing the carb and so I never seen it will one on it. I purchase a small engine book but it doesnt show how the linkage hooks up. Also what about the choke?

Thanks

Lot's of different ways to hook bot cable and housing to motor/carb, but this is what I did for a direct to carb hook up...

And here's one to the govener...

this might help a little bit.

well he has to run the goverener in his class...

So behind the mount are two linkages ....

Long black arm gets "z" bend link to carb...(red)

White arm with tab gets spring (blue) to govener arm (black)

Throttle cable (from throttle control) goes thru clamp and atachs to slide...(green)

Only trick is red arm pushs and newer carb needs pull action.

Okay I think that is what I needed to see. But what about the choke? should I just run a separate cable for it? I think I have read about people just removing the choke. would that be something I would want to do or have done?

its a personal prefernce. i know my 10hp briggs will not start (when it cold) without choking it. if you remove it, youll have to hand choke it whenever needed.  if you leave the choke, set it with a different cable.

If rules allow it, running a seperate choke cable is preferable to running the throttle "overide" function...

That way you can set the throtle to squeeze it tight to full open with out worrying about overiding into choke....
