Totally Unrelated Car Question
« on: July 30, 2012, 02:34:47 pm »
Ok my mechanically inclined friends.  I have a serious question..No one else could answer this for me[about 6 different mechanics.] I brought a 98 plymouth neon. The car will run like a champ until you turn the ac on then it will run for a little while and then goes to heating up. We thought it was the catalytic converter, but once that was replaced its still doing it. Any ideas as to what else it could be.

Thanks,
Jenny

1. Cooling Fan(s), if equipped with two, one may not be working due to failed motor, or relay contacts/control windings open, or current limited so they are turning slow, or mechanical drag/brush failure, etc.  You really need a graphing multimeter and current clamp to figure out the motor issues.
2. Radiator Restriction - Partial plugged - coolant look like mud?  Gets warm after pulling off highway (A/C off before trying this)
3. Thermostat stuck partially open - check to see of one side of the valve retainer bracket has broken - common problem with Stant's crap the last 10 years.

CAREFULLY observe these items, and let me know.

Like he said, electric fans are most likely it! But get it checked, If you know someone with a scanner they can turn fans on and off and know for sure.

Check the radiator fins. I saw one with deer damage that had the fins smashed enough to make it heat up after it was ran awhile

Take the thermostat out and run it and see if it still gets hot don't thank that's it though pull out the oil dipstick and see if the oil looks watery might be the head gasket and it gets hot under load

The rad might be plugged, when it is warmed up touch each tube with your finger to see if they are all hot.If you find cold ones they are plugged, hope you find out what is wrong Jenny

Fans is most likely the last thing to make it run hot if it dont run hot seating idle as they on most cars kick off above 35 MPH. Thermostat would be the first thing to change and don.t buy a cheap one. Ather that would be the radiator half pluged. The longer you run it the hotter it gets. But I did fix a couple over the years with head gaskets, radiator would be my guess.
Your local radiator shop can do a flow test on your radiator just pull it and drop it by.

Its sometimes hard to actually see a any signs of a bad head gasket. But there are a few ways you can check for one.

1: with the engine and radiator cold, remove the radiator cap and then start the car. If you see air bubbles coming up through the coolant, that's probably a bad head gasket.

2: Check the oil. If it has a sort of chocolate milk look or smells like coolant- that means coolant is getting into the oil.

3: Check the overflow reservoir and see if there's oil sitting on top of the coolant.

But anyway, when was the last time the system was totally flushed out? That probably wouldn't hurt anything anyway. As others have said, a new thermostat is also not a bad idea, plus they're cheap.  If its a blown head gasket, that might mean an expensive repair and you'll need to weigh the options in regards to the car's age and value.

Are you sure they both run? If you have not seen them run you will need to prove it! Is the engine running ok? I have alot of time working on neons, at a chrysler dealer ship and the aftermarket, alot of fans get replaced. It will be hard to see bubbles because of they way the overflow is designed, if you still suspect a head gasket you should test for combustion chamber gasses in the cooling system. There are several different ways to do that, contact your local parts or service place. Prove it first before you guess and it costs you way more than nessesary!

Sounds like a radiator to me. if it were a head gasket they would be adding water often. I am rolling back over and going back to sleep now!!

Al both fans are working. They have seen them running. The engine itself runs great, the car is just getting hot after a little while on the highway when you turn the ac on and after today even when you dont turn the ac on. Thats what is throwing everyone off. And George is right its not using any water and if it it was the head gasket it would be using water wouldn't it.

Yes Jenny if it was a head gasket it would be using water. The radiator has veins in it and some of them are stopped up. It cools good for the most part but when using the air its not flowing enough water to keep up with the cooling thats why its doing ahat its doing the way its doing it. BEEN there done that. Fought it for over a year before we put a radiator on it. Had we done it first would have saved alot of money.
