opposed pressure lube mod help
« on: May 18, 2012, 02:26:45 pm »
Hi , I have been searching for a couple of answers but have not found them, so I thought I'd ask.
First, I have splash lube 16 and 18 hp opposed vert. shaft engines. I just got a pressure lube lower and need to know how to convert one of them. I have the L head manual, but it doesn't provide specific part differences that I can find. Second, since the adjustable HS needle is no longer available, what other needle(s) might fit in the drilled plug? OK, maybe three questions. Does anyone know of a schematic for the Flojet carb on the oppys? I would like to see the operation and flow inside. Thanks for any help. I'll keep looking in the mean time.

What do you mean lower, the pan? I have never seen a schematic for that carb, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exsist. Carb stuff is how some on this site make their living [or some of it] so some will offer to do it or be vag on what to do. Rooster is really the one to ask and he won't be back till monday.

Certain splash lube blocks (mostly later ones) can be converted but it is no simple task. A 3/16" inch diameter oil passage must be drilled that is 7" long for starters and it must be precise. You will need a pressure lube cam or convert your splash lube cam (machining the pump drive on the gear end of the cam and then center drilling a 1/4" hole making the cam hollow). Not for the faint of heart. It can be done as I personally have done 2 and showed another builder how and now he has done several.

Thanks Al, and Les. Yeah, the lower crankcase/pan part, with the pump and filter, is what I have, along with 2 splash lube motors.  I'm having a hard time, using the manual, finding which parts are different, and which are common to both versions. I'm new to lawn mowers, and no one is racing them in NM. yet. The adj. HS jet thing is me simply not wanting to re-invent that particular wheel. No problem making jets and needles. After all, 'It ain't rocket science.'  (Jet science?) Anyway, if anyone chooses to share any oppy science, I'd appreciate it, and I'll do the same. If not, I understand. Thanks, H.

Les, I'm wondering if you would share your knowledge with me? I have the machines to do about any modifications necessary, and I've stressed my old heart many times. Thanks, H.

Don't forget you have to drill the crank as well...
Do a search for Oppy, opposed, etc lots of info here on them

Thanks Rooster. Been searching, and will continue till I hit the right search words. Here in the desert people rarely buy lawn mowers, much less a more expensive pressure lubed one, so those parts are beyond rare to me.  I appreciate the answer. Much nicer than SOME groups. H

Yup. I didn't need to. Some of the late splash lubes came with a pressure lube crank and I had one. I've never done the crank.
