School me on TVT691's
« on: February 03, 2012, 09:54:01 am »
Getting back into racing and ran into a friend who use to own a small engine "mower" shop.
He has a brand new COMPLETE (less muffler) 20 HP tvt691-600814 Enduro VT still in a box he'll sell me for $300.

Good starting point??? or look for another base engine?

I know the TVT691 have a long history but not educated on newer versions vs. older ones.

It's a good engine. A TVT is a TVT no matter when it was made.

I'm a little concerned with the "VT" part. This sounds like an early OE691, which has crappy factory roller rockers and smaller valves. It's easy to tell the from the outside. The old stamped rocker-armed engines had stamped tin valve covers, whereas the roller rocker versions have finned cast aluminum covers.

Bert
Gary Busey and Rick James both used to live in my shop. Redline stole them.

This is a standard tvt model stamp steel covers stamped rocker arms 5/16 valves. The good part is EC has everything ya need to build it into a monster motor. Of the tecumseh motors its the best one to build in my opinion.

Tom, great to see you getting back into it!  I'm still working on my 691 project as well so I'll be watching for your posts as well as Berts and Georges.  $300 sounds like a good deal as the best deals I have found and bought were close to $500 brand new in original boxes.
