Grid postions
« on: November 17, 2011, 03:21:35 pm »
Hi Guys,

Just wondered how you choose your grid postions for each race at a race meeting. Is it Random from a hat each race or predetermined by computor. Or maybe laptime. Just curious as we are trying to come up with a fair system.

Cheers

Our track pulls #s  for each class.  start as they are drawn for heat 1  reverse the starting order for heat 2  then the best average finish start's on pole and so on back.
Fairest way we have seen But you have to run 2 heats every class  Weve been to tracks where they draw  start the heat   then cancel second heat and if you styarted deep you have no chance come feature as the guy on the pole never had to deal with starting last in the second heat.

We do a random draw as racers sign in. Then the winner of the first heat for that class draws a chip numbered 1, 2 or 3 and if 1 is drawn we run as they finished the heat. If they draw a number 2 we invert the front 4 ans if 3 the front 6.

I like what was done at the All American. We ran practice laps and the computer told us who was fastest.  This would require some extra tools but makes life simpler .
You never win a race by focusing on one aspect of the race!  Motor isn't everything, but you better have a good one!  Chassis too!  But remember, a driver can take a slow machine and make it faster!  I may not have/be the best of any of these but I'm trying!

We draw # for the heat and your finished position in the heat determines where you start in the feature.

I want to further explain our system. We went this way to promote passes and a good race show for the crowd. If you start the fastest mowers in the front it becomes follow the leader. If you do a set invert people "sandbag" to get put up front. But with points on the line in the heats and only a possibility of an invert the field races hard during the heats and 3/4 of the time there is a invert at least up front. (I misstated - chips are 1, 2, 3 and 4) Almost every class has 2 or more heats. An inverted field of 2 heats puts first heat on the inside and 2cd heat on outside with finishing positions. On an invert we do the same then do an invert. with three heats the first 3 positions are the winners of the heats in order (1st heat gets pole, 2cd heat winner outside pole, 3 heat winner starts 3rd, 2cd place 1st heat starts 4 and so on). Then if needed the invert. Promotes excellent racing and plenty of passes.

PALMRA draws pills to set the heat order.
The finish of the heat is automatically inverted for the feature.

We give points for the heat race as well as the feature to prevent sandbagging.

If you can make it to the front in 10 laps in the heat you can make it in a 20 lap feature.

We have done this for years, works quite well.

Points are close at years end.

we do an invert of points, 3 heats in my class, here is how it goes:
say there is 16
1st heat
16 13
10 7
4 1

2nd heat
15 12
9 6
3

3rd heat
14 11
8 5

2

they take the top 2 out of each heat and everyone else goes to the B main/trophy dash and take the top two out of there.

Thanks for the feedback guys. We currently run 6 or more races in a day. We add up the points for all six races to find the winner for the day. We currently draw positions for each race so they are random. We dont run a final race to decide the winner of the day. It seems that if you win pole and have a competive mower then you are very likely to win unless you make a mistake. So i was looking for other options.

Cheers
