10 hp rebuild, need help
« on: September 02, 2011, 01:06:42 pm »
I have a 10 flathead that I am getting ready to rebuild. I have the resources to get the jug bored, but I also have a honer tool. My question is, would I be better off to buy bigger rings/ bigger piston and get it bored over, or buy rings for .010 and hone it out for a nice tight fit.

Thanks,
Jake

well it all depends if you really wanna go .30 and spend more. but myself if its a old 10hp non synchro id use a standard piston and you could get the .10 rings BUT you will have to get a ring filer and "file to fit". that is what most do to ensure no blowby and max compression i hope i was of some help

BORE IT. THATS THE BEST WAY. HONEING IT WILL MAKE YOUR SIDEWALL TO PISTON CLEARANCE TO BIG.

.020 is all briggs makes these days. Have your piston in hand you are going to use,
before you bore anything.

I have 4+ seasons on a cool bore block and only changed rings once (to file fit for closer gap)

That's on the 22 special and been turning 7500+ for most of it's life...

Change oil often...

No cast iron sleeve in this one.

Squidd, will do. It's a habit of mine to change oil about every week (I run my motors a lot, just piddling with them.)

NO

You can't put cranks, rods, etc from one series into the next...that is why they are different series, by the time you get done making it all fit you've spent alot of money making what the next series started out as!
