1018 or 4130 for axle
« on: January 09, 2011, 10:43:57 am »
In locking a transaxle with a block in the ring gear and adding a 1 piece axle are most people use just 1018 steel or are they upgrading to 4130 steel.

Thanks

The chromoly axle is the best choice. Also lighter weight

I think the question is on the grade of steel to lock a transaxle with, if so, use something in the middle too soft and it may bend, too hard and it becomes brittle and with break.

What I meant was I am going to lock a transaxle like Rooster and kmowtion did in this thread  http://www.heymow.com/index.php?topic=7808.15 and was wondering what others have used for axle Mtl.  If 1018 works well I'll go with that as I have plenty on hand. But if others have had problems with it I'll order some 4130.

I make all of mine out of 1018, have never had a problem with it.
4130 may be better for the axle, but if you have a wreck bad enough to bend the axle, would you rather bend the axle or break the case?
I had one 1018 axle last almost 3 seasons, when we took it out it had worn grooves from a locked up  bearing, other than that it was fine.

If it is a 3/4" axle I use 4140 for the application described.
If it has blades I'm not interested.
