12 HP intake
« on: June 07, 2010, 09:26:57 am »
Looking at the cast chamber under the valve, there are a lot of awkward shapes to deal with. Has anyone added material around the area where the valve stem enters the chamber. There seems to be an improvement to be had by smoothing and filling in there.

The slow setting JB Weld seems to hold up fine in the intake, but doesn't last long on the exhaust side.

It is truly amazing how much you guys can wring out of these castings.
I've been wondering what NASCAR would be like if they had to work with aluminum castings like these.

Ok, I weld it up and use a high speed grinder to get it like I want. One hint, keep spraying the cutting tool wioth WD-40 or it will clog the burr.

I dip mine in oil.  Cools well and keeps the chips from flying as much.

Snap-On makes carbide die grinder burrs for aluminum that don't clog up. They work very well, but they are pretty expensive.

And they are VERY AGGRESSIVE!  I was going to buy a set of Alum only burs (Mac, not Snap On) But they tool guy said if you even touch steel with them, it will take the edge off them.  SO I ended up buying the regular steel burs and used them on my alum heads, and they work awesome as long as you keep them cool so the alum don't build up in the bit.  AND if you happen to grind the steel valve guide, no worries!

Good burrs are worth the extra money.   I had a cheepo NAPA set the they got dull grinding alum!

Yes, they are aggressive, but I use mine to cut steel, too, a lot of the time. It doesn't seem to hurt them at all.
And they have the wide grooves in them so if I get a burr up my  :omg:  ooops!!  :nono:.... I mean if I get aluminum stuck in my burr, I just use a small screwdriver to push it out!  :D   Normally that doesn't happen, though, unless you get it too hot, or the burr is worn out.
