NEW! U.S. OPEN S/S BUILD
« on: October 16, 2011, 09:10:23 pm »
I'm starting out with a craftsman lt4000 with a blown 12.5 hp briggs and 6 speed transaxle. Oh and cant forget the bagger lol. Today I tore it all down pressure washed the yard grime off and got to work. I started to clean the paint off the frame where i wanted to weld the square tubing I was goin to use to reinforce the frame when my trusty old air compressor locked up. And wouldnt you know sears doesnt sell parts for it anymore so off to lowes i went and baught a brand new 60 gallon beast to replace my little 30 gallon hunk of junk. anyway back to the race mower i welded in squre tubing and set the frame on blocks to the height i wanted to ride at. 4 inches in the rear and 3 in the front. the rules say i can go as low as 2 inches but then i wont be able to run fenders. i will be running a peerless 600 i picked up for 40 bucks . i made brackets out of 1/4" steel plate and bolted them between the housing and axle tubes. but before anyone asks i cut slots in the bottom of the brackets to allow the trans to be removed from the bottom instead of pulling the axle out which wont be possible because the axle will be replaced with drill rod and welded in. i will be makeing custom axle tubes to correct the width and make it even because the way i mounted the 600 it is longer on one side then the other and i started building my custom 4 on 4 hubs that will have the brake rotors attached to them i will post more pics when i get more done

Nice startr, are you planning to hook the top tubes to the bottom tubes?

Be sure you look at the input shaft on the 600...that is their weakness.

Not to be a downer but, correct me if I am wrong but I see some offset in there and I BELIEVE that it is only allowed in the supermod twin/single not the S/S class...

yea i plan on geting the bearings to put in for the input shaft and yes there is some offset there but i will be building new "axle extension tubes" if thats what you want to call them so they will be the same length and then i will be replacing the stock axles with a 3ft piece of drill rod so the new tubes and axle should correct the offset. hope i explained that good enough it kind of confuses me sometimes lol and yes i also plan on tieing the upper and lower square tubes together and adding a crossmember that my jackshaft will mount to
